911 Slant nose
Howzit from Scotland. We have just purchased a 911 Carrera Cabrio 1986/7 model which is fitted with a Turbo body and slant nose. The car is an ex- Mass registered and was imported to the UK in 1991. It was already converted when it arrived here but we can find no further info. The car now looks factory standard and has done 11000 miles since 1991. It is metallic red with white leather and tan roof. The problem is being a 3.2 non-turbo then the body has obviously been modded at some point and we do not know why or where in the US. The slant nose is also a bit different in that it does not have pop up headlights - they are mounted in the front bumper!! After many hours searching the web for details we have found only one other that looks the same - on an offical Porsche site but there are no further details!! Guess what - a local friend of mine has just required a similar car with the exact same front as mine - whats the chances of that?!?!
Anyhow can anyone shed any light (no pun intended) on this model and details of any shops who might have carried out this work between 1987 and 1991 in the Mass. area. Any and all help will be gratefully appreciated. Regards Paul Feruson

Any body shop or individual could have done this conversion.
Are the front fenders fiberglass or steel? You can use a magnet to find out. If they're fiberglass then my money is on the conversion parts being from a supply company name A.I.R. This stands for American International Racing which was originally owned by an actor by the name of James Garner. They made many aftermarket fiberglass parts for cars. Do you have pics? That would help to determine the manufacturer.

The front fenders look to be steel.
Just to point out this style is not factory standard. Pretty much the parts were mixed and matched. Many people who have done this conversion wanted a job which replicated the factory 930S look. Also, those headlights would not be legal in many states here in the US....making it less desirable. Are you looking for opinions on wether to buy or not. Or simply looking for history.

wasn't that an older Gemballa conversion kit, prior to the full "Avalanche" kit?

K9,
I personally have never seen a Gemballa looking like this. It looks like the relatively standard aftermarket 930s fare with the exception of the front bumper and the lightless fenders. Judging by the quality I'm sticking with my AIR sourced bumper assumption.

Rick. I've already bought the machine - yesterday in fact! Drived very well but not very powerfull - my standats Lexus LS400 V8 feels a hell of a lot quicker.
Still it's a nice car - just trying to sort out it's heritage!

Check with AIR International, in the back of either Excellence Magazine or they sometimes advertise in your Porsche 911 World Brit mag. I beleive they are the ones that make this conversion front end. The lights mounted on the bumper are supposed to be used as driving lights, the vented front fenders may be from their track only parts bin with headlight delete.
Hope this isn't a dead end
