My cig lighter doesnt work, cant find the fuse?

Anyone know where to look? I looked in the fuse box and there is nothing indicating cig lighter.

Any tips on this? (not to mention the wiring is in an unreachable location behind the dash to trace)

Stick a power port device in there first. Might be a bad cig lighter. That would be a lot easier than tracing wires that I have no idea where they go.

Oh, beleive me, it was not for the cig lighter, it was for an old radar detector I was going to use. (so yes, I plugged that in and no power)

Oh well, I tried

Does your radar work in another car? I will try to help when I get home tonight if someone else doesn't chime in.

Do our cigarette lighters work with the ignition off??

juanbenae 08-30-2004 09:33 AM

"Do our cigarette lighters work with the ignition off??"

Nope - unless you have two like I ended up with.

This is the diagram from an SC.

It shouldn't be that far off.

Er.....I guess I should try that too, but my cellphone charge doesnt work in my P-car, yet it does in my other cars.

I seem to recall some discussion about how 911 cig lighters are a different (larger?) size than most cars, and that is why many phone chargers don't work. Maybe a search will help. I wonder if someone, maybe the dealer, has an adapter.

My lighter socket does not hold the V1 plug very well either. I ended up wrapping some rubberband around the plug, making sure the metal parts of the plug are uncovered. It made the plug a snug fit, and it sits just fine. Makes me realize I could just take some effort and wire it up to the ignition. It would look cleaner too...

Is it ok if I just splice the wire into the same wire that gives power to the radio, or should I really go into the ignition wiring?

You got some expensive equipment there. I would buy a Radio Shack 99 cent inline fuse and double your protection. I'd also go to something that doesn't have a lot of draw or doesn't get used much. Windsheild wipers, maybe, but I bet the cig lighter has it's own fuse in the panel.....If we only knew which one it was.

I know that on early models the cig lighter goes through a 6 pin connetor on it's way to fuse # 4, hope this helps,Randy

I'll check it out tonight, thank's!

5 amp fuses are yellow
8 amp fuses are white
16 amp fuses are red
25 amp fuses are blue

Colors can fade/change with time; check the chart in your owner's manual.

bigrubberjeep 08-30-2004 09:04 PM

Well, on my car the blue fuse #6 was blown (just found this out tonight) I thought I had checked them all yesterday)

#6 is labeled cig lighter along with "rear wiper" wich I dont have

So I swaped it out with the only replacement fuse I had (white) it blew out as soon as I pluged in the cell phone charger

So I figured, well sinc eI have to get fuses tomorow anyhow, lets try the "rear fog light" (I dont have any) fuse as a replacement just to see if it works now, it also blew!

So now I figure I have a short some where, I just dont know how in the world I am ever going to trace the wire since it is in a harness along with like 15 other wires.

(tomorow I'll replace my rear fog light fuse, don't know why but I will anyhow)

The # 6 fuse on the 10 fuse block or the 9th fuse counting from the the windshield to the front of the car. This fuse controls your windshield wipers, washer pump and cig. lighter. it's a 25map.

Are your windshield wipers working?

Well, that answer to that question just created more questions.

Windshield wipers work (good thing) - Yet the #6 fuse is blown (bad thing)?

Is this an indicator that my wiring might be a little tweaked?

kqw 08-31-2004 08:25 AM

Sorry Bigrubberjeep...

NOT the windshield wiper but the rear defogger. Look at the fuses in the engine compartment. I was looking at another issue for a fellow owner.
