Sunroof doesn't close fully everytime? and other S/R questions

My sunroof doesn't close fully everytime. I don't use it much but when I do somtimes it will close like it should and somtimes it closes all but the last few inches, or where it climbs up in the front. When I run it back and try it again it will usually close.

I'm going to be replacing the felt gaskets and want to repair this at this time.
Also my headliner on the sunroof needs to be rehooked as it's not being held up at one point on it's seam. I want to fix that too.
TIA :)

Make sure your cables are clean and operating smoothly. They and the exposed rails should be free of lube and dirt.

Make sure the roof panel is adjusted correctly. There are adjustment knobs and screws behind the liner.

Make sure the headliner does not get in the way of the sliding path of the panel.

Often the small gear inside the gearbox fails. It can be replaced easily.

The same thing is true for the rubber coupling. that fits on the shaft of the gearbox.

If you search, you will find an exploded view of the sunroof system.

Bob, go lightweight and ditch it :)

Hey, Brad
Believe me, I wish I didn't have one as I never use it :)
I'm just trying to fix a few things and that felt seal was one of them.

one corrner of the SR (back left) is way lower then the rest..... can i adjust that up with those screws?

Paulporsche 08-31-2004 01:25 PM

Air-cool,

Yes. If you open the panel about 4" and pull down and back on the liner, you will expose the screws, etc. The front is adjusted w/ knurled nuts @ the front corners.

The rear height is set by adjusting the ratcheted arms @ the rear where the cables connect.

Is the arm which raises the rear of the sunroof supposed to only push forward and raise straight up, or is it supposed to rotate over-the-top a little (after reaching the top of its ark) to press the panel against the back seal?

Paulporsche 08-31-2004 02:05 PM

There is a built in stop that limits the extent of travel of the arm. I don't remember if it is past vertical or not, but the stop regulates the motion.

If you open up your sunroof, why not post some pics and let us know?
