catalytic converter for 87 3.2
How can you tell if your catalytic converter is bad? I bought my 87 3.2 Targa in Jan of this year. The po put on a bypass pipe (not a pre-muffler) but did give me the original cat converter, the car has 88K miles. I've done the usual stuff: fuel filter, Techron x2, ignition wires, plugs, cap, rotor, air filter, oil change, valves, fan belt, tranny oil change, new O2 sensor. The plugs looked pretty good when changed. The compression test was all cylinders 150-155.....I don't like the smell when idling, I can smell the exhaust when sitting at a traffic light if there is a "back" breeze. So I'm thinking this is due to the cat converter not being installed. Does that sound logical? Before I put it back in I was wondering if I should have it tested, but how? What about after-market converters, anybody have any experience with those? I hear that the cheaper converters smell more like "rotten eggs". Finally, are converters made for use with SSI headers? Thanks

The 911 catalytic converter can easily go over 100,000 miles before replacing so probably still good. Can't use a converter with SSI's.
