If you like the cars, you're one of us, no matter how the name is pronounced.

For years I called it a Porsh and thought that people who called it Porsha were goofy, but I have learned since I bought mine that it should be pronounced "Por-sha". I prefer "Porsh", but it is someone's last name, so I figure I should pronounce it correctly.

IMHO... yes, it's bad to call it a POORSH. That's how I gauge the difference between somebody who KNOWS about Porsche (a real enthusiast) and just somebody who thinks their cool.
I'm filling up at the gas station... A guy approaches me... "Beautiful PorschE... is that a '72?" Yes, I reply. He says... "I can tell by the oil filler door on the side.". I'm thinking this guy is a real enthusiast and we talk about PorschEs for a few minutes. I find out he had one a few years ago and he regrets selling it. Another guy approaches me after filling up his beat up pickup truck. He says "Hey, is that a POORSH?"... I say, yes.. and he says, "yeah, my buddy had one. He paid $2,000 for it. It didn't have a motor so we stuck a chevy in that thing. We used to go race through the woods in it. It was bad ass..." "That's nice". I roll my eyes and drive off. Scenario 2, actually happened to me. No offense to the mispronouncers out there. Just my opinion. Maybe because I come from a German family. It IS someone's name. I grew up with people always mispronouncing my name, so maybe it just makes me cringe more than others.

I realize Por-sha is the correct way to pronounce the marque but I just can't bring myself to say it that way. Oh well....doesn't make me any less an enthusiast or any more ingnorant.
It does sound proper when my German (accented) neighbor pronounces it the correct way though.

Sure 'porsha' is correct, but I consider 'porsh' the American (mis)pronunciation. Sorta like how Hyundai is pronounced 'hunday.' Likewise, I highly doubt most foreign tongues pronounce Chevrolet correctly.

I'm just curious, is the Japanese pronunciation of "Honda" the same as ours ("hawn-duh")?

This thread could get interesting. I'm sure there are regional differences as well. Especially since I'm from Ger-Zee.
I remember being kidded because I pronounced dog more like "dawg" than "log".

Colin, I believe you would pronounce it more like "hooon-da" with a long o sound, equal weight to all syllables (as in all Japanese words). You kind of have to purse your lips a bit to get it, but with our without, any Japanese would know what you are saying.
As for the Porsh versus Porshe, while the nuances of the "correct" pronunciation of Hundai, Peugeot, et al may be difficult for the thick American tongue, at least get the number of syllables right. IMHO.

I'm American, I say "Porsch". I agree that it is a name and should be pronounced correctly, but I also have a german last name, and it is not pronounced here in America as it would be in Germany. So, I guess I'm just another one of those who thinks their cool.

i was asking some of my german friends about the pronounciation, and according to them it should not be pronounced "porsh-uh" but instead "porsh-aye." yes, "aye" as in "aye me boy, shiver me timbers and walk the plank." i can't bring myself to say it, as it sounds a just a bit too affected. i'm think i'm just going with "porsh-uh."

I pronounce it Porsh-ah. But if someone says Poorsh that's fine by me.
