CIS Fuel Injector Question
 

I'm thinking about cleaning and replacing the components of my fuel injectors. From what I've read and heard it sounds like an easy job... except for the fact that the old sleeves (brittle) can break and fall into the intake runners.

If this were to happen, how would I be able to get the pieces of the sleeve out of the runners? Remove the CIS? Fish it out?

I just replaced mine and every one of the sleeves broke into pieces. Luckily I had the manifolds on the bench when I did this. If they break the pieces will most likely fall into the head, not just the intake. Hopefully your's arent as dryrotted as mine were.

Make sure you have that particular cylinder at TDC if you dont want to get debris in the combustion chamber. Then maybe a shop vac with a SMALL attachment on the end to suck anything that may fall onto the back of the intake valve.

Maybe the bits will burn up like the air box shaving after installing a pop off valve......I dont like that idea though.

Point of clarification: The manifolds will be on my car, not a bench. :D

Is Charlie's suggestion of vacumming the little bits feasible?

Has anyone actually been in the situation I've described above?

Sorry I cant help, but I'll add a little more info from my experience. The only way I was able to remove the sleeves, with the rock hard seals, was to put them in a vise and use a punch from the bottom of the manifold.

On mine, they were so hard they came out with the injectors, so I'm no help at all.

Maybe you could push some kind of plug down there tied to a piece of tie wire, maybe a rag or something that you could pull back out with all the bits and pieces? Just a thought.

i popped them out of my 75, and i didnt have any problems. i guess you are trying to work out a contengency plan? i didnt even know of the danger when i did mine. phew!

I replaced all mine on my '82SC. They all came out w/o breaking.

No problems here...
