McMaster Carr Fuel line collar
Hi and thanks to those who responded to my recent questions about fuel lines.
After having read through the various pertinent threads I am about to replace my nylon CIS fuel lines w/ items from McMaster. Am I correct in understanding the function of the collars mentioned is simply to hold the line in place while the barbed fitting is inserted? Is the collar slit in half so it fits over the line, is screwed in place, and is then removed and reused on another line as reqd? Is there anything else I should know? Thanks again.

Collar is used only to grip and support the nylon line while the barbed fitting is pushed/tapped into the line (soft face - plastic or rubber hammer only). The collar screw doesn't provide enough clamping force hence the need to split the collar and clamp the pieces together (using a vise or visegrips) around the line. As the barbs move into the line one may need to reposition the collar to allow the barbs to expand the line. Alternatively, the collar can be tapped with the hammer if one is trying to drive the line over a barbed fitting integral to a component such as a fuel distributor or WUR. When the fitting is into the line, remove the collar and reuse the collar. Do not cut the old line off the fittings; burn it off with a torch or soldering iron; if you cut it, you will almost surely nick the barbs causing leaks. Be sure you order the correct nylon line; not all types are rated for hot gasoline service. Jim

You both have been very helpful.
BTW Harry (if you're still there) or anyone, the return line from the WUR disappears behind the engine. Where does it reconnect? I can't tell from yanking on it. The exploded view is a little ambiguous in that area.

Paul,
In the center top of your fuel distributor is a connection with two nylon hoses. The Banjo fitting hose goes to the fuel control regulator (part 43) and the end hose goes to the WUR. The fitting for the hose is part 76 (I think) in the exploded diagram. you can see the Banjo fitting behind it. ![]()

Gawd -- you guys are reminding me why I hate CIS - I 've exterminated it on two engines now.... both went to carbs. Well, Good Luck.

Randy, I appreciate the good wishes. The CIS has actually been very good to me over the years, w/ almost 170000 mi of trouble free service. Since the engine is a hybrid, with a 1980 WUR but no O2 sensor or DME, I have no vacuum control over the control pressure. I decided to swap in an earlier, vacuum controlled version so I could get better starts when in cold temps, enrichment @ full throttle, altitude compensation, and more economical running. This was extremely easy to do, except for my own clumsiness. While reattaching the new WUR to the engine block I snapped the fuel line right @ the connector. This particular line, which returns from the WUR to the fuel dist is NLA from Porsche, so I will make up a new one, thanks to help from the guys on this BB. My only issue w/ all this is that if the lines were some other material, say braided stainless steel, the line would probably still be intact. The line did not break on its own, however. I just smacked it hard @ the wrong spot.
