Starter Won't

Okay, so I replace the fuel line on my '80 SC turn everything on and it starts. Then replace the grommetts, the boots on the shifter rod out the back (b/c they are torn) and the floor board.
Try to start it again, and NOTHING happens, except a very high pitched whine from the CD box, and the tach goes all the way over to the right. The fuel pump makes NO noise, like it had before. There is a loud cliick and the entire car goes dead (ie interior lights). HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Retrace your steps and see if you pinched a wire causing a short. Check the battery connections, ground straps.

Cleaned the grounding strap, checked for pinched wires (couldn't find any). Now the solenoid clicks on with the starter switch, but does not engage the starter. Do I need a new starter?

Usually if the solenoid just clicks it would mean you need a new starter, but with the way you described things (especially the lights going out) it still sounds like an electircal problem. My first guess would be a short somewhere. Have you checked the voltage on the battery?

From my experience a clicking solenoid is a sign the starter is not getting enough juice. I would remove and clean the battery terminals inc. large ground straps (is there one under your car by the tranny?), make sure the battery has water and is charged. If that still doesn't work try jump starting w/ another car/battery. It still may be the starter but my bet is in the battery.

You're right. Cleaned everything, then made sure the terminals were tight and kaboom!, the thing starts!
THANX to all!
