Got a new flywheel from Pelican; but it's all oily! How to clean?
Alright, what's the best way to prepare a new flywheel for installation? My new flywheel was packaged in oil to prevent rust, I presume, but how do I properly clean it?
Oil ruined my last clutch; I want this one to be flawless! Thanks for your help. Brian

After you get it bolter down and torqued onto the crank, right before you attach the cluch spay the crap out of it with brake cleaner to get all the oil off the friction surface, don't spay into the center of the crank or you will have to regease the pilot shaft bearing. (you did replace it didn't you).

Uh, spray prior to mounting it, so you don't have to worry about the brake cleaner affecting anything important...

possibly was it oiled (lightly) by the manufacturer after finishing to prevent any rust from developing during storage and shipping? i mean light rust/corrosion?
i second the brake cleaner method.

Brake cleaner or lacquer paint thinner PRIOR to installing!

Yep, brake cleaner. Evaporates, leaving no residue. That's not true of most solvents. Laquer Thinner is a good solvent, but does leave some residue. Brake cleaner and alcohol are my two favorite final rinses.

I would wash it in solvent and spray the pressure plate contact surface with the brake cleaner after installation. You will be handling the flywheel and get the surface soiled. The solvent will leave a little beneficial residue on the non contacting surfaces.
Wayne makes a point about potential damage from errant BC, but you can control the spray and protect from it running down the backside and rinsing off your RMS. Just use rags or paper towels. You can stuff a small rag in the pilot hole. Be sure to properly air out rags so they don't spontaneously combust. This way, you won't be using much BC and you can be sure your contact surface is not smudged with oil, asssembly lube or dirt. |

Be sure the clean and inspect the mounting surfaces for any dings or other damage before installation. These two mating surfaces need to be clean and debris free..

thanks for the advice. i thoroughly cleaned the flywheel with brake cleaner BEFORE installation, and sounds like i'll give everything one last wipe down before it goes together this morning.
i agree with superman, alcohol and brake fluid make superb final rinses... brian
