Can I buy the metal gaskets for the screws for an oil change at a Kragens?

Thanks.

Are you referring to the ALU washers for the plugs on tank and sump? I re-use mine several times with no problems. Do you have the updated sump plate with the single plug? Or do you have to take the whole plate off?

HOOT! You ARE trying to be funny, right? I have one of the oil plug crush washers on my keyring...whenever I pass a fastener supply company, I ask. Haven't found 'em yet. Alas, our host's price for them seems typical...

I am getting cognitive dissonance from this --- you pay a mortgage or rent in SF, and want to save a few pennies - literally - on these things??

Or is it quick availablity that's the issue?

I'd just wait a few days until you can do it right.

I'm just wondering if it's a special part, or can they be picked up at a local auto parts store. I've never done this and don't know about the updated sump plate. Just lookin' for a little help that's all.

It's a special part...just a simple flat crush washer, but the size is such that you don't find them at auto parts stores. I thought a local industrial supply that handles all sorts of metric fasteners would have them....nope. I've done a bit of looking, stopping at perhaps a dozen or so places. So far, I've only found them through Porsche oriented outlets. But, I still carry one on the keychain of our daily driver...in the hope that I may someday find a store that has a box of 100 for $10 or so...Then I'd share the wealth with friends. It's not the pennies Randy, it's the principle!
K.Roman? One suggested purchase? Our host's "101 projects" book. He used an SC for most of the photos in the "how to" book, and one of the "projects" is an oil & filter change. It all depends on how much you wish to wrench on your car, but IMHO this is a valuable book for those who wish to begin working on their own 911.

Geeez, they cost me about $0.50-1.00/ea at the Porsche Parts Counter. Compared to the rest of the cost of an oil change, ($6-7/filter, $12/12 qts oil), it seems like no reason to kill my self driving all over town looking for them.

Yeah Harry, I know that...but you also know that a normal crush washer should sell for a fraction of that. Like I said, it's the principle! Besides, you live in Portland...Sunset Porsche is a nearly 200 mile round trip for me...

- Ya, I feel the same way. We should probably get counseling for it, tho.

K.R. - You need to find out about the sump plate. You will need gaskets for that. Have you done an oil cahnge on this car before? If not, it might be the 101 Projects book, and is probably on the technical projects side of this BBS too. ALso try out the search button. Good luck.

Yeah, I like to save a few $$ when I can (check out some my hillbilly repairs ) but sometimes it is just not worth the effort.

Hey Roman,

Sounds like money might not be the issue.

If your in the mood to change your oil this weekend and you don't have the "crush sleeves", those little aluminum washers that keep the oil from leaking, you have a few options.

If you live in San Francisco you can drive to Easy in the east bay and pick up a few or you can simply re use the ones you have.

I have a 79sc, same car, and change my own oil.

If you have other questions just post them. If you need help I live in marin and I don't mind changing oil.

Have fun.

I have the "101 projects" book, that's how I know about the gasket.
Thanks for the replies.
