oil pressure gauge pegs

On my '73, the oil pressure gauge pegs high (140+ psi) whenver I turn the key on. This is after putting a differnt engine in it (a 1986). The sender is from the '86 and the 73 uses a different p/n.

But.... the real problem is that the gauge pegs high even when the sender is disconnected (!). I thought it should peg low if it sees an open circuit - am I wrong in that?


Could the wiring ground star in the front be bad or something?? And where is the ground star in front?

If the sender wire is unplugged from the oil pressure gauge then the gauge needle will DEFINITELY sweep all the way to the right under power.
There should be continuity thru the sender or the sender is bad.

Test continuity per picture:
