How short is too short?

I have a lovely '89 Wide Body 3.2 Coupe with only 34K miles on it. Sometimes a small puff of smoke on start up (if it's been sitting for a while!) but otherwise it seems to burn almost no oil.
My problem is that I rarely get to drive it!
I drive a "pick-up" for work and usually work 6 days a week so the time available for long drives is fairly minimal. However on nice days or evenings I'm often tempted to drive the Porsche to the bank/shops or to the pub but I'm usually put off by stories of premature valve guide wear if the car is used on short journeys! Why does this happen and how short is too short?
Should I just enjoy the car and drive it whenever I can no matter how short the trip???

Don't worry so much and enjoy the car. Premature valve guide wear really won't show up until the 60,000 mile mark so at the rate you are driving it will be years before you may or may not have to worry about it. For the health of the car it would be a good thing if you could get it up to operating temperatures at least once a week.

in general try to avoid trips where the car never gets the chance to actually come up to operating temp... and avoid revving above 4000 rpm before it get's to that temp...

dunno how fast yours warms up , mine takes a good 5-10 km to do so

I heard a young lady explain it once, she said "don't worry about short, touching bottom isn't important. But if you don't touch sides......"
Of course she wasn't talking to me, I just overheard it ;)

Wow, this thread went from zero to OT in 26 seconds

For those of you who can still remember the topic, I think Stijn has it right.

For those of you who don't:

HUMMADA HUMMADA HUMMADAH!

Are we still talking about a car here?
