Deleting Bumperettes, Move the plate lights where?
I would like to delete the huge bumperettes on my 79 Targa, but I am not sure what to do with the license platet lights that are housed in them. I suppose I would need to remount them in the smaller bumperettes or something alike. So for those that have done it, what did you do?

I believe you can get number plate bolts that double up as (LED) number plate lights. I'll see if I can find where I saw them.

Thanks for the ideas. I am still not really excited about plate bolts that have built in lights. I am not trying to have some sort of fancy bumper, but rather just lose the weight / eyesore of the bumperettes. I was looking for something new to mount them in. Keep 'em comin.

I removed all the rubber on my bumper. Reversed the shock bolts so the studs come out of the bumper. I drilled one small hole behind the plate and used (Lightning Boltz) in place of the license bolts. Works great. |

Check eBay. From time to time some gems pop up, like these Hella lights, which were incidentally used on the...917 to light the race numbers

I used some light weight plastic units from a local parts store. They were chrome but I painted them the body color. If I would have known about the LED mounting bolts, I may have gone with those.

I'd, of course, agree with Kurt. I frequently get question like "what do you do at nightime?" until I point out that the bolts have lights in them.

Ok, I am conviced. I guess I will get the lighted bolts or the lighted plate frame. It did not appear that the lighted bolts produced enough light, but if you guys say they are ok, they're ok by me. Thanks for the input. I never knew such a product existed.

What is "enough light"? I really don't care how illuminated my rear plate is--I use a plate frame with little built-in bulbs--I just care that I can show the cop, or annual-inspection facility, that yes, the reara license plate is indeed illuminated.

Stephen. Obviously no driver cares if there even is a license plate. The point of the plate and the light is so that the police can keep tabs on you and run your plate when they are behind you. If the fuzz doesn't think your plate is well-lit, it is an excuse to pull you over, give you a ticket, run your driver's license, poke through your car, delay you, and generally big brother you. I (call me crazy) prefer not to give them that excuse. That is why "enough light" is important to me. I don't even have annual inspections where I live, so that is not even an issue.

Eastwood Co. is out of stock. Any other sources for lighted bolts?

It actually is my brothers G50 waiting to install. Mine was at the shop. I gave up on the mid engine idea when I realized I'd be sitting on the valve covers
As far as finding another vendor, here is one http://www.truckaddons.com/Catalog/subpages/DEI_lightnbolts.htmIf this isn't viable, search the brand on google and find other. Good luck. |
