transmission stuck -- Help!
Three days ago I shifted into 5th, and have been stuck since then (not driving of course).
Following the advice in other threads, I checked the shifter alignment, reverse lockout, etc. Then, I took off the access plate and found that one of the static fork studs had completely fallen out (and was laying on the plate). The other two were quite loose. Anyway, I cleaned everything up, got a new gasket, reassembled and moved the gearshift around a little tiny bit. I didn't want to harm anything with no tranny oil. I added oil and was about to drop the car when I though I might try shifting just to be sure. Guess what, nothing has changed. I wonder if I should have tried to shift back into neutral before reassembling the static fork and access plate. Is that true? do I have a slider on the wrong side of the fork? Here's a pic I took right before putting the access plate back on (and before refilling with oil). ![]() Please help me get the daily driver (well, not so much right now) back on the road... --sagacis

You're probably in two gears at the same time. You should have moved the sliders to their nuetral position before closing up.
You won't necessarily damage anything because there is no oil. It's all oily enough to rock the wheels and try shifting easy just to make sure. |

yes, all the shift shafts have to be in neutral, and the tip of the selector finger in the shaft's notches before installing the cover.

Thanks for the rapid feedback. Just to make sure, this is where my problem is, right?
The red line represents the selector finger, and the rectangle is around the two shift-shaft notches. I will try to move them to the middle and popping the selector finger back into them. Currently, one of the gears is engaged (which is evident by the shaft notches not being lined up in the middle, right?). I've read it before, and I'll say it now: This board allows me to fix things I never thought of fixing before, at least without somebody standing over me directly! ![]() --sagacis

correct. then put the tip of the selector finger in the notches and trap the finger inside the fork on the cover plate.

Perfect! Love the great help of the board. I had to pop the fifth gear shift fork back to neutral with a screwdriver and then I could line up the finger in the two notches. I pushed the access plate back on and tried the shifter out.
It works great now! I haven't driven it out of the garage, but I was able to engage every gear. I'm very excited to have completed what to me is a more major repair with relative ease. Thanks again for all the help. --sagacis

One more quick question:
What's the torque value for the bolts to hold the access cover on? I seem to be leaking a bit of the oil now. It's also possible I messed up the gasket or need to clean the area better, but I thought I'd rule out the easy one first. Thanks! --sagacis

Or, possibly, can I use blue silicon gasket maker for the gasket to ensure complete coverage?

mine leaked after i took it off to check the fork bolts. i drained the fluid again and installed a new gasket and a bit of sealer. no more leaks
