It will depend on who does it & what you have done.

Very rough:

Basics - inspection of mechanics, test drive ~ $125 - $150

Basics + leakdown & compression ~ $225 - $300

Basics + l & c + headstud check ~ $300 - $400

guesstimate a minimum 2hrs of the wrenches time for anything thorough.

I dished out about $250 with basics, leakdown and headstud check. This was two years ago in New Hampshire.

I've recently had two compression/leakdown tests on two different 911's I was looking at. The first tests were $95 in South Carolina and the 2nd tests were $75 in PA.

Most reputable wrenches will charge a flat amount of time based on how much you want done. It its an older car, definately get the leakdown (usually 150-250 around here). If you can afford it, head stud check is good.

If I'm purchasing a car that I probably won't be able to see before it's purchase what should I have the mechanic do in the PPI and what else can I do to ensure the car is in the condition the seller says it's in?

Thanks for the advice!

High resolution digital pics? I'd want to be on the phone with the mechanic while he inspects it.

Call the local PCA president in the area where you are buying the car. Ask him who he reccommends for a PPI. Call the mechanic and make the arrangements and make sure the mechanic understands that since you are paying for it, you want a written detailed inspection report (list of all items inspected). Ask him if he knows the current owner ("yes" may mean he will be biased in favor of his friend). Also ask the mechanic to give this report to you alone. If the current owner wants the report, he should be getting it from you.
