You can get access to some state MVA records by writing to departments in the states that the car was previously registered. They can search by VIN number. Because of privacy laws, names are not disclosed in most states. There isn't much information....just the odometer readings when the car was registered or inspected. In my case I found records from MD, DC and OR back to 1984. The owners names were blacked out. I was told by the OR MVA that records became computerized in the early 80s but again it depends on the state.

FWIW, I've sold a number of Porsches over the years...I hope 20 years from now the current owners don't call me asking questions about the maintenance I did or didn't do

Last summer I sold a 1986 Sea Ray 18' foot powerboat. It was in decent condition for its age. I sold the boat, motor and trailer for $2K which I thought was a very fair price. I wanted a quick sale and "got my money's worth" out of the boat after 8 seasons. I received many calls on the boat. Finally a guy shows up with the money to buy the boat. He says $2K, right? I said, yes, $2K and don't call me once you get it home, fair enough?

Done deal and he never did call me

you might be able to contact them thru PCA. I was able to get home addresses for several PO's. I wrote letters but they never replied - I wasn't interested in their maint. but asked about the unusual paint color of the car, etc.

I think there are several present owners who have thought the same. Unfortunately, not for the same reason as you, but to explain some bassackwards upgrades.

Harold - It's going to vary from state to state. My state, Washington, considers owner info "public records" and will disclose the info. It takes some time, but if you have the patience and a few bucks, you can request a "TITLE HISTORY" from DMV....Some private investigators will do this sort of thing for you also....Good luck...Bob S.

I would suggest running a Car-Fax so you can find multiple locations and find the mileage history but if the odometer broke at any time, the mileage may not even be accurate. Do you have any receipts that came with the car? Most POs request that you don't call the previous previous owners if that makes sense. I have the info on mine but mostly because of receipts. Once you find the one owner or city/location you can find the shop that did most of the work and they most likely have a service history on the cars they have worked on.

Will the shop part with service history?

Some shops will part with past history, especially if you seem to be a future customer. Going to them and asking to find out the past history so that you will know if the inspections are current is a good way to start.

The reason I was curious is that I have a 79 in a rare color that had smog and the only owner I do not know of is the original owner. The Vin is a short 79 VIN - 9119200865. I have been told that only Cali cars had smog in 79. Is this correct? I know the 2nd owner, who is in Virginia and the car has been here ever since, got it after it was only a few years old and had it for a long time. I bought it from the 3rd. I have service records that indicate that and if I'm not mistaken it shows more owners than that on car fax, though. Just trying to figure out some more history.

All U.S. cars had smog from '78-on (a catalyst) - even the worldwide 911s had an air pump, I believe -

You got a car fax for your car? I don't believe they are available for the short VIN cars (pre-1980)

Maybe not on the car fax. I could have confused it with one of my prior P-cars. If they all had catalyst and air pumps after 78 then it was probably always a VA car?

thanks

Rumor has it that in the old(er) days the PCA COA *DID* list the original owner and other first sale info.........that info is now considered private -
