The Mille Miglia? Targa? The Carrera? The
Car models or car parts?
No, originally they were automobile races. Races Porsche would eventually dominate. "The Targa Florio was not so much a race as it was an ordeal. Established in 1906 a single lap was approximately 92 miles. Besides the course which traversed mountain roads unchanged since the Punic Wars, there were severe changes in climate, bandits and wolves. Each hairpin competed with a sheer abyss for the driver's attention over a 3 lap race of 277 miles. Initially there were few rules and the event was open to standard cars of which at least ten identical models had been built. " The Mille Miglia "First though, some basics. As the name implies, this race was always roughly 1,000 miles, from the shortest run in 1940--a nine-lap race round a flat, 103-mile triangle--to the longest, a 1,139-mile loop run in 1948. The Mille is famous for traversing every extreme the Italian roadways offer. From fast, flat autostrada to tortuously curved 3,000-ft mountain passes, through wide-open country or crowded medieval alleys, normally only wide enough for a single car but narrowed further by masses of humanity, the entire Italian populous cheering by the side of the road, reaching out to touch the cars and drivers for good luck." The Carrera "Each year there is a very colorful and exciting road rally that takes place in Mexico called "La Carrera Panamericana". This historic Mexican road race is open to everyone with a passion for driving. In 2001, over 100 teams driving vintage American sedans and European sports cars participated. The race began in the southern state of Chiapas and ended 6 days and 2,500 miles later in Nuevo Laredo on the Texas border." If you have ever wanted to safely push yourself and your car we have a day trip for you. Make some history of your own and join us. More to come but look here for the first: So who's going on the Quelle run this weekend? This is a driver's event. Lots of turns...hundreds of miles of 2nd and 3rd gear twisties. Lots of short breaks but little time to enjoy the scenery. Scenery that is some of the most incredible in the US BTW. But there is a place for everyone and you don't have to do the full 1000. We'll have a "short" group going to a couple of the most scenic areas and back in the early afternoon for the BBQ while waiting on the "full 1000" to arrive. Be part of the fun no matter what Porsche you are driving and even if the family has to show up in the "other car" ![]() We'll be doing the full 1000 clicks at the 1st annual BAQMR in September after Labor Day, rain or shine. Date to be announced asap. Early Saturday start of 6AM on the road for the "1000". Remember the 1000 km @ the Ring, the Targa and the Mille Miglia? The cars were built to "race on Sunday, drive to work on Monday". While we aren't going to be racing and we will be driving on public roads, this route, the mileage and the endurance of both car and drivers is what makes Porsche such an enduring legend. We need an event honoring all of that. Now we can do exactly that and more. Those that aren't into that kind of seat time or Dramamine can join my lovely wife, Tracy, for fun and entainment at the a BBQ while waiting on the cars to arrive. You want a "can't miss" event? This is it ![]() |

give this thread a well-deserved bump
now it seems a crying shame that there have been such scant responses to what amounts to one hell of an opportunity to drive your Porsche the way it was meant to be driven. take it from those that have done it before, this trip is an absolute joy! and to be able to return the same day to a fully hosted BBQ?? what more could one ask for?? if you've had your car for a while and want to get reacquainted, here's the chance to fall in love again oh, and did I mention that there might also be a raffle for one hot little '79 lightweight coupe??? ![]()

It's not real clear where the drive is taking place or the starting point. Can you guys clarify this?
Thanks, Troy

not a problem
the drive will loop around the southern Cascades in Washington. beginning in Issaquah, the run will pass through (among other points) Enumclaw, Randle, Trout Lake, White Salmon, Goldendale, Yakima, and then head back through Chinkook Pass for the picnic at one of the state parks in the Issaquah vicinity. it is an absolutely beautiful and at-times challenging route. the technicality of many stretches will have one conjuring up images of what it must have been like to run in races such as the Mille or Carrera. there will be a shorter, less demanding route for those not able to do the full distance but who still want to take part in the picnic and end of run party. heck, that alone should be one hell of an event any more questions, feel free to ask

Here are some pictures of the last one. Not all pictures have been posted as of yet.
So who's going on the Quelle run this weekend? This drive's date is Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004 Start and way points: Issaquah's XXX Drive Inn Enumclaw (coffee stop) Cayuse Pass Longmire (gas and a rest stop) FSR 25/90/24 (this is the core of the drive & hrs of twisties, views of St. Helens and Mt. Adams) White Salmon/ Columbia River (lunch here) 14/142 Klickitat canyon (more twisties and a great, twistie hill climb coming out of the canyon with no guard rails ![]() Goldendale (rest stop at Brooks Park) on to Yakima and Chinook Pass back through Enumclaw and the Landsberg Park (King Co. with limited facilities but it is FREE) on the Cedar river for a BBQ. Gas and rest stops are scheduled every 100 miles or so. We'll start early. 6AM on the road. We'll drop the "short ones" off at St Helens mid morning and we'll back for dinner by 6PM is the idea. Days are short on daylight in Sept ![]() BBQ is BYOB and burgers to the park. Or make arrangements with those who will be cooking ![]() Be the first to get a 1000km Monster Run (or a "short-one" if you must) golf shirt! Anyone care to do a logo for us? Dane,
Keep posting updates as to starting point, date, time, etc. My folks are in Gig Harbor (where my wife and I grew up by the way) and it might work out for me to be up that way... Troy

We figured people can show on Friday night and get some rest if you are out of the area. Get an early start for the drive on Saturday and have a off day, Sunday, to get back home.
Sorry we missed the hill climb Troy. Hopefully next year! |

I didn't make the hillclimb either. If Pelicans were going to be there, I was going to make the drive. Anyway, plenty of stuff to do around the place. I was busy.
