Where do you buy your hardware?
I'm chasing after the little A 18 x 22 mm aluminum sealing rings that go above and below the banjo fitting under the oil pressure sending unit on a '73E.
This seems like a part that should be available at any auto parts shop or even at the hardware store, but frequently I am SOL when looking these places for little things like grade 8.8 metric hardware. Guess I should break down and buy those Wurth assortments. Where do you buy this stuff? And does anyone know why I can't use a copper crush washer instead of the Al sealing ring? |
This is why I hate the big-box stores and have pledged to never, ever buy a thing from Wal-Mart or Home Depot no matter how big a "bargain" it is. Our local multi-generation family-owned hardware store has an incredible, nicely shelved, easily accessible assortment of metric, stainless-steel, 8.8-grade and other hardware, indluding every size O-ring, springs from minute to massive, circlips of every size...I found them an enormous resource even in building a full-size, FAA-approved airplane, to say nothing of a German car.
This is just a useless (to you) rant, but I do love the small(er) stores that still sell quality rather than quantity. Stephan |
CC,
I've used Maryland Metrics. Google them for the address. They have jsut about everything you can think of. Jay 1977 911S |
I'm not sure if they have the aluminum rings, but www.mcmaster.com is a great place to buy belleville washers, metric nuts and bolts, adhesives, tools, etc. They have one of the best online catalogs I've ever seen.

I also use McMaster-Carr but for misc stuff use a local place thats like walking into a old fashioned hardware store. They sell everything by the pound and when I am low on hardware I head there.
Agree with Wilkinson and refuse to spend a penny in WallyWorld or purchase anything bubble wrapped... JoeA |

I use my local Ace Hardware. All kinds of fasteners in steel, SS, and hardened grades 5, 8, 12, 8.8, 12.5. Not to mention all kinds of other goodies and stuff. The two near me have 2 aisles of those little drawers.
