I'd try wet-sanding with 1500, then 2000, followed by 3M Perfect-It II medium-cut, then Perfect-It II swirl mark remover (the one for dark-colored cars). Your local auto paint supply store (Wesco, etc.) should be able to set you up. Good luck!

At the risk of spawning into large argument about this subject, have you tried the Zaino Brothers products? It has been my personal experience that it takes off bird drop marks as well as acid rain marks very, very well. It worked wonders on the spots all over the top of my 01 Mustang. It got hit with acid rain while the paint was fresh in Detroit at the factory waiting for the train.

Z-5 is the product that “Hides” the acid rain and bird droppings. I also strip the old wax off like they say with disk detergent, then clay it, then start with their process of Z-1, Z-5, Z-2(clear coat) or Z-3(non clear coat), Z-5, Z-2, etc. until I get tired of it. The more coats you put on, the better the shine. A little warning you have to let the Z-2 or Z-3 dry completely or you will just spread it around and piss yourself off. I usually leave the Z-2 or Z-3 on for a full day and the garage before I wipe it off.
To answer your question, Z-5 is the blemish hider. Z-1, Z-2, Z-3, and Z-6 are the rest of the products I have to complete the whole process. Do yourself a favor and read the testimonials, search for some on the net as well, and read the instructions on the Zaino site. It is a serious PITA, but I think it’s worth it and you don’t have to worry about burning through paint.

I like the Griot's Garage products, he has a machine polish in stages 1,2,& 3 and a special pad that can be used with any velcro style orbital that is GAAAUUUURAANNTEEED (he wants you as a "customer for life" after all!) not to scratch your paint.
Also, if it takes wet sanding, I have some emery cloth that is used for polishing the paint jobs on scale models that works really well. I wouldn't use 1500 grit like you mentioned. This kit has 5 stages , starts at 4000 grit and ends up at 16000 grit cloths. Then you can follow up with a polish. The 16000 grit almost feels like leather it's so smooth. The kit is available from Detail Master for around $20. |

Call this guy. He really knows his stuff and he'll take the time to explain it to you. Prices are reasonable for what you are buying.

![]() If you aren't getting anywhere with rubbing compound, Wet-sanding w/ 1500-2000 is perfectly fine (and basically you're only alternative). I've done it with excellent results on single-stage and base/clear-coat auto finishes, and it's standard procedure at bodyshops. Granted, you have to pay attention to what you are doing. Make sure the panel is clean/degreased (Prepsol/Acryl-Clean) and use a flexible sanding block with a quality silicon-carbide wet/dry paper. Use a bucket of water with a few drops of dish soap, and keep the area and paper continuously wet/clean. ![]() |
