Booting the cat: Bad idea?

Hi all, I'm a long time reader who finally got bitten by the Porsche bug. (I'll provide some pics of my new baby when she's decent :D )

Anyhow, what I believe to be the catalytic converter had a good hole blown in it. (I say "believe" because it's a Euro car and looked more like a muffler on the inside than a cat. Did Euro SC's even have cats? Nothing about it in the PO's import papers.)

I whipped up a quick fix by getting the sucker cut out and having a pipe welded in it's place... effectively creating a bypass that looks much like the one sold by Pelican. (FYI, I'm exempt from emissions.)

On to the questions:
1. Will this negatively affect the engine in any way? I know this supposedly gives a small performance boost, but I'm more interested in reliability for now.

2. What sort of effect does this have on the engine sound? The last time I heard another SC was very long ago, and I want the car to sound more or less stock. Being that the cat was bad from the get go, I really don’t have much to compare to.

3. Can someone tell me what a "Euro premuffler" is? I see it sold by several vendors... is it just a bypass shaped like a cat? Or is that what had blown on my car?

Big thanks!

Yes you had a premuffler on your car, not a cat. The premuffler is said to give a bit more HP than a bypass pipe such as what you replaced the premuffler with.

Would you say it's worth the cash to replace it with a new premuffler? Or should I stick with my hack? The welds are rock solid and the whole thing looks like it'll keep together for a long time to come.

Thanks again.

It's ok the way it is. I bet that if you put another premuffler on that you wouldn't feel the diffeence.

Sounds good. What about reliability/engine sound? Any downgrade in the quality of either of those?

Mike: Sent you a PM.

I'm in beautiful Coney Island... home of Nathans, the Cyclone, Astroland, and much more.

Who else is in Brooklyn? Or NY Metro for that matter?
