911R Fuchs over on the VW board
A pair freshly restored offered to the cheap VW guys:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=104562 |
I'm looking for a pair of 911 R fuchs. Prefer not restored so I can have them done to match my other wheels. The Samba site seems a strange place to post them.
|
How cheap can they be if the wheels are posted 4 sale at over 6 grand a set!! Do they really command that kind of price??
|
$1500 ea. is the going rate, AFIK.
|
These are being sold by old skul?

Andyjboy was johnny-on-the-spot and got a killer deal, $480. Although its not too clear to me if its a pair or single.
|
Single R wheel.

At these prices, shouldn't someone take a few measurements and set up a CNC machine and have a few blocks of aluminum on hand for the rush?
Really though, I thought someone was looking into have these made out of 6x15s, cut, banded and welded back together. |

Hey Zeke....was looking fer ya at the GAF.....guess you were blinded by the dazzling paint on Frankensteen....?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095047382.jpg |
"set up a CNC machine and have a few blocks of aluminum"
That won't get you a forged peice. That is the secret of the Fuchs legendary strength. If you just carve something out of billet it is not very strong - the grains are not oriented. A forge is spendy. I know a guy who did his own forgings. Took him forever. |

Just curious, what makes these wheels so special? Just the rarity or something to do with their make-up?
|
Rarity. Simple as that. It's a 7" wheel the looks like a 6. The extra width is to the inside. I've looked right at them and had to be told. On the rear, they use spacers because they otherwise rub the tires on the camber adjustment bolt heads. You can see that when you know what to look for.
Maybe some have used them on the front too, I don't know, but I would suspect a lot of rubbing there too w/o spacers. |
Same case with the 951 fuchs, but i dont see them selling for 1500 each. Oh, wait...rarity.
|
Plenty of people have made their own "R" wheels, but they are just not the same. I saw something like 7 pairs of these welded 7's recently. They weren't even using Fuchs for the donor sections... chevy or something... You get what you pay for.
R's also weigh the same as 6's (usually a tad less). |

The auction was for one R wheel. I spoke to the seller (Manfred) a few times. The ad clearly states that the auction was for a single wheel (if you're able to read or translate German).
