I'm in a predicament at the moment.
I have an 83SC Targa RHD 204bhp that I could sell to a friend for exactly the same price as an 84 3.2 Carrera Coupe LHD advertised by a local and reputable dealer. ![]() http://www.911virgin.com/32jpb.htm Should I go for it? Both have done just short of 110k and the LHD has sevice history from new. I'm going to look at it Monday what is the most important thing to look for/ listen for/ ask about on the engine? Everything else I can handle, it's just the engine I need to be sure about as I really like my 3.0 at the moment and would be gutted to buy a duffer.... Ade

why would you even bother ?? ,any gains from the Carrera would be buried by having LHD......I once had a LHD RS2000 ,it sucked because you need a passenger just be able to over take other cars....don't do it.

Ade,
Better the devil you know! Get your exhaust backdated and you'll be up to nearly the same power as the 3.2 Also, wouldn't you miss the open air driving a Targa gives you? Cheers, Tim.

aud2.7t, LHD is not a problem - a license saver if anything! Plus they drive better (my 1st 911 was a lhd targa) and were designed that way. The pedal ofset makes for an uncomforable motorway haul. In my opinion anyway. What year was your RS? I've had a couple of mk2s and a Mk1 mexico in the past. (why oh why oh why did i sell them
![]() Tim, I do like the wind in my hair but just how much chassis rigidity am I losing? Would it be noticeable on track?

I have had LHD cars before. OK, well one! LOL
Overtaking is not a problem IME, when you have a powerful car. You shouldn't need to ride someones tail before passing them. Hang back a little, read the road ahead. By hanging back you can see oncoming traffic just as well. OK, it's not going to be quite as convenient as a RHD, but as said above, LHD feels better in a german car once you are used to it. Brake systems usually better and the pedals in a 911 would be way better. I have big feet, and get my left foot stuck behind the centre console unless I rest it on the clutch pedal! ![]() Still, it's your call. I'm not sure that in your case there is much to justify the exchange. Especially if you know your car well and it's well sorted.

Come to think of it, that car is an ideal candidate for my planned backdate project!
(Mr. Olsen what have you done? How can I break the news to my wife?) In which case, you must not buy it!!! ![]() Only joking, it's too nice for that.

i have a 3.2 lhd and love it. but theres not much between the ones you are talking about. you havent seen it yet so that mat be the clincher. do you want a targa? probably too late now (monday morning) but check out: no smoke. only minimal leaks. warm it right up and check oil level/condition. unusual noises/rattles. good luck.

LHD in a 911 is way better IMO than RHD if you're tall.....I can hardly get comfortable in a RHD 911 but have no such trouble in my LHD one.
Driving an LHD car over here isn't a problem the vast majority of the time....only when paying tolls and car park exits is it a pain, but for me the car is far nicer... But unless you really want a coupe, changing from a RHD targa to LHD coupe seems a little strange. |
