Aluminum VS. Magnesium Tranny Case

Seems from looking through this site that many of
the boys have some good experience and might be
able to help out this newcomer.

I am doing a 901 - 915 tranny conversion (V8) and
wanted to know in buying a 915 tranny if their is
much difference in the strength of the Magnesium
Case vs. Aluminum Tranny Case. Is it really worth
taking the extra time and money to locate Aluminum
unit if I can find a good magnesium case from a
1978 911 with about 100K ?? What should I expect
to pay to get a good one.

Other question is regarding regular rebuild on the
915 tranny if not abused do they require syncos,
etc after 100K, 150K or 200K+

Part Number series ?

Any idea what part # I should be confirming with the owner
since he is located a thousand miles away. I will not be able
actually "look" at it prior to purchase, but understand it is
from a 1978 911 2.7 liter. Based on general info it should be
a 915 tranny unless someone previously replaced with a
earlier model ! Appreciate comments

A 1978 should be a 3 liter SC and not a 2.7 (the last year was 77 for 2.7s).

1978 is the first year of the 3.0 liter SC, so why it has a 2.7 is odd. I think all 2.7's have mag cased trannies, so you'll need to know if it was just an engine swap or if it was engine and tranny. If the tranny is original and it's a 1978 US model, you should be looking at a 915/61 gearbox. Later SC gearboxes are 915/62 (ROW) and 915/63 (US). If it's a 78 ROW (rest of world) then it could be a 915/44 'box. Info from Peter Morgan's "Original Porsche 911."

Much Appreciated ! BUT being new to the 911 Porsche scene
does anyone KNOW what part# or codes within the part number
that will help ME to figure what tranny I am considering.

I will also try to find out if the owner is aware of the potential
previous engine / tranny swap. THANKS for replies.
