bumper pad swap?
what's involved in a bumper pad swap? I assume I've got to pull either the bumper or the exhaust? Can't seem to reach the nuts as is...
Yes, I did a search, but didn't pull anything up. |

You need to pull the exhaust to get at them. I removed them when I had my engine out and really don't recall seeing a way to get at them with the exhuast in place.

Whatcha swapping? Big for small, or just a replacement?

my mechanic just removed them and he didn't touch the exhaust so there is a way to do it but I can't tell you how. Let me ask my mechanic tomorow how to do it.

When going from big to small, are there any holes to fill in the bumper? Or is it a straight swap?

yes, there are holes to fill. I'm pretty sure you can get plugs for them though.

Todd you can reach them without taking off the exhaust, I did...but I wasn't ready to paint my rear bumper at the time so I put them back on.

The rear bumper is pretty easy to remove, really. You'll probably want the bumper off to get the wires re-routed to the license plate, anyway, so you may as well pull it. It sounds like a lot nastier job than it really is -- once I sat down and did mine, it only took about 30 minutes.

I removed my valence and was able to easily get at the bumper and pad bolts to remove them...

What are you guy's talking about??? This is one of the easiest things to do. You DO NOT have to remove the exhaust; just the heat shield. A few 15mm nuts and they are off. As far as the wiring goes; just remove the light housing from the bumper pad and disconnect. 30 minutes at the most.

I just removed mine without removing the bumper, but I scraped the S**T out of my arm on the valence. I am removing my bumper next to refinish it. I found 3/8 inch plugs at the auto store to fit the holes, but although there are only 3 bumper pad bolts, there are 5 (or so) holes each side! I bought the lite-n-bolts to illuminate the plate, so I will need to drill holes behind the plate to wire those. Any suggestions on permanently filling the holes. I would weld them shut and grind it down, but its Aluminum!!!. Bondo, JB Weld, anyone? I really don't know how to deal with aluminum.

You can use JB weld, but give it a good 2 days to cure as it will shrink a bit. Then use a bit of filler to finish it off and paint!

Thanks Kurt. I will give that a try. I have not used JB before. I suppose I will grind / sand off the corrosion spots around the holes, JB them full, and skim coat some Bondo to sand to a smooth finish.
