new Boxster looks like the new 911 again
I've always liked the Boxster body design but wished it didn't resemble 996 so much and vice versa. When the 997 was introduced, I was glad that Porsche AG got rid of the fried egg headlights. But if you take a look at the link below, you'll see that the new Boxster still looks like the 997. They even share the same wheels and hood! I thought the company was going to make sure the two cars can be differentiated from afar but I guess not.

my thoughts exactly...
yes i can't agree more....i think as a design, the new boxter looks great, but I thought they would've at LEAST had different wheels!! I could tell the hood is the same as the 997 when I first took a glance. still i think overall it is a sweet looking car....
also, I wanted to comment on is the performance specs.....aren't they getting closer than before to that of the 911? and i wonder what the price point will be compared to the old boxter... overall though the car looks impressive....the attention to detail that you see on the porsche site, especially in the interior, looks very attractive. I also think that the chronograph option acually matches the dashboard design of the boxter and looks good (unlike in the 997 where it sticks out like a pair of fuzzy dice)

some of this marketing pseudo-technical material is really something. I quote from the cooling system animation:
"The cooled coolant is transported back to the engine, and will enhance the sporty performance" I can't believe someone lets this crap out the door!

Andy,
That's almost as bad as their explanation as to why a Dry-Sump was such a good idea for 997 in that "Split Second" video... "to ensure proper lubrication of the engine at all times, even during sporty driving style" WTF?? ![]() Who dreams up all this drivel? Maybe it's just lost in the translation...

Hi Chris.
The wife and I have considered a Boxster for her as a daily driver and for auto-x. By the time it works in to our budget, the new ones will probably be coming off lease :-). Otherwise, I would think a 2000 S or newer would be the best choice.

hmmm, not a bad idea to wait a little longer Ross. I've got an itch right now though to drive a newer Porsche but I do hate car payments. What to do, what to do...

The car looks fantastic, but I am somewhat disapointed that the front end looks only marginally different than the 997. I agree with Kobalt and Adam, whoever let these writings out into public is rediculous. "even during sporty driving style" You mean people actually drive their Porsches in a sporting style? Wow, I thought I was the only one

Looks a lot like the MR2. Those headlights really make it look like a toyota

Got to remember guys that the population segment that Porsche targets wouldn't care or wouldn't understand the significance of the poor marketting terminology if you explained it to them.

The "sporty driving" from the video stood out to me when I heard it.
I don't think it is an accident. The natural words, esp. for the dry sump, would be it is a competition system designed to handle the rigors of racing. But I think they've learned their lesson on that kind of language. I'm sure technical told marketing "nothing even implying you can or should track the car! Sporty driving, yes. Track, no!" |

Looks a little more "muscular" than the old one.

Does the 997 have a true dry sump design? I was flipping through a 996 brochure at the dealer when I went to check out the 997 and they claimed (in the brochure) that the 996 had a dry sump. I know the turbo, GT2, and GT3 have it. Oh, and the dealer had never heard of any engine failures on 996s or about the RMS problem.

Looks kick ass. 280 hp and 0-60 in 5.2 for the S are good numbers.
Personally speaking, the 997 looks too bulky and large for my tastes. I was looking at picking up a good used 993, but the Boxter S looks better, is under warranty and just as good of a perfomer and modern car. ![]() would like very nice next to the 86 in the garage. http://www.yenra.com/porsche-boxter/ |

I dont see it.
Lets be honest: all or most sports cars share similar traits....you could pick out one thing and say that it looks like something else...particularily in this day and age of cookie cutter styling. However in this case, look at the side inlets on the MR2 leading up to the scoop...looks very pussified in my opinion. The Boxter is much more aggressive. In addition, the Boxter is lower, wider, fatter tires, more elegant hood styling, aggressive front end, cooler headlights, lower, gas tank in front, sleeker in aerodynamics, muscular and just generally ooozes quality when compared to the pic of the cheap MR2. |
