Wink P-cars in movie "Cellular"

Maybe this was already talked about, but there is a 996 and a Cayenne in the new movie "Cellular." Caution - for the squeamish, the Cayenne does get wrecked. As for the movie, it was OK...maybe rental worthy, but I wouldn't waste $8 on it. Buy a bunch of Vaseline with the money and spend the 2 hours polishing your wheels instead.

Our car has been typecast. For the last 20 years or so the 911 has usually been the bad guy's car. It seems to be an easy cinematic statement of smugness and/or malice. There have been exceptions of course. Good guy Robert Redford drove a classic 911 in Spy Games, and Morgan Freeman drove a black Carrera in one of those detective movies he was in. Before that, it wasn't automatically the case. Steve McQueen and Paul Newman drove Porsches in a few of their films, to good effect. Anyone remember McQueen's 911S from "LeMans?"

There were several Cayennes (Pepper wagon's movie debut) and 996's in the Movie, and a press release on the Porsche website. I wonder how much that deal was worth? Oh, and speaking of type-casting, the character driving the 996 cab was an obnoxiously arrogant attorney (actor did a great job with that role).

Don't forget Mission Impossible (1 or 2?). The good guy ( I forget his name ) drove a black 996 cabriolet while chasing the woman driving the Audi TT.

The movie preview looked interesting, I got an advertisement to go test drive a Cayenne and they would give me 2 free movie tickets for Cellular. But maybe I'll wait till it comes out on video to rent it.

There was an awesome looking 911 briefly in the third Matrix, too. Very Briefly.

Remember McQueen driving the 911 in the opening scene in LeMans? I saw it when I was 12, put a poster of his Gulf 917 on my wall, and vowed I would someday drive a Porsche.

so remember:

new Porsche - BAD!
classic Porsche - very cool and very good

Kind of like the Nic Cage quote in GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS, referring to the difference between buying a 550 and a 250GTO... buy the new car and you're a rich weiner; buy the classic and you're a connoseiur.

Another good Porsche movie -- No Man's Land with Charlie Sheen circa late 1980s. Sheen plays a rich-kid kingpin of a ring of LA Porsche thieves. A cop goes undercover as a mechanic in his operation but is corrupted by Sheen. Some good driving and chase sequences. At one point the two thieves are trolling for target cars and pass a Ferrari ripe for theft. Sheen dismisses it with a sneer.

However, best car chase involving a Porsche is in opening sequence of Against All Odds, 1985. Jeff Bridges in an 83 SC Cab vs. James Woods in a Magnum PI Ferrari down Sunset Boulevard. Chase is long and thrillingly staged by Taylor Hackford in midday traffic. Bridges has it won until... well, I won't spoil it.

Have you seen the trailers for the movie Wimbledon (sp) on TV. One of the two main characters drives an old 356. Between the 356 and Kirsten Dunst I may just have to sit through a movie about tennis!?!

I hope they make a movie out of the book series by WEB Griffin called Badge of Honor. The main character drives a 911 that plays a big part in the stories. He is my favorite author; I'm surprised none of his books have made it to film.
