Techron equivalent in the UK & new ride

Hi all

I have previously posted regarding a fouled plug and got loads of usefull tips, thanks - see plug below

One of the most common suggestions was to use some Techron and take the car for an Italian tune up(ie drive it like its stolen) and see if it will clear any clogged oil control rings or other deposits causing bad ignition etc.

Having looked all over for Techron in the UK I cant seem to find any so 2 questions:

1. Where can I buy Techron in the UK?

2. If I cant buy it what would be the best substitute?

Oh yeah, I have also noticed that i have commited a Pelican sin of posting questions before posting pics of my new ride so here you go - I love it!

Hi Jevvy

Is Caltex a petrol retailer in the UK ?
In Australia Techron is sold through a large petrol retailer called caltex.
I suggest looking at Chevron USA site for any info on the UK.

Jevvy,

You may want to also consider BG Products. They make some fairly decent cleaners and additives for fuel injection, oil deposit removal etc. I know they sell in Europe through France. If it's the oil control ring that's clogged then you're gonna need something in the oil to help break it down and loosen things up. I'd do both the injection cleaner and something for oil deposit treatment, regardless of who's product you use.

Thanks for your help guys...

Andrew - Caltex is not a station in the UK but thanks for the suggestion, I also looked on teh Cevron usa site and I couldnt even see techron for sale although they do mention it a lot. (BTW im from newcaste UK!)

Dan - I havent heard of BG either - might go and trawel through some bottles of chemicals at the local motor store. I hadnt head of "oil deposit removal" so I will include that in my mission too, Ta

Rich - I have decided to replace dizzy cap and rotor arm too, I thought that although 1 was fouled those plugs looked new but now you mention it I may have a dodgy plug!

so, new plugs, dizzy cap & rotor arm, bottle or 2 of techron equiv, oil deposit removal gunge, an italian tune with fingers crossed - does that sound about right?

Jevvy

I've used Comma D-Tox with good results. Its a fuel system cleaner and on my '88 Clubsport, it completely cured an idle problem where revs would hunt intermittently.

It was recommended on a BMW forum and costs about £15 and is available from Halfords. FWIW, the packaging says its BMW approved.

Unlike Techron, an oil change is not required, though possibly worth bearing mind if you've just changed it. IIRC, its OK to add every 6000 miles.

Hope this helps

jevvy,

I think you are barking up the wrong tree ... expecting a fuel additive to clean up a fouled spark plug problem that is clearly a lack of spark or an excess fuel problem at the #2 cylinder.

With a new set of spark plugs in place ... try to determine if normal spark is present at the #2 plug -- I bet it won't be! An inductive-pickup timing light would be a good start, but ultimately you may need to put it on an ignition analyzer scope.

The problem appears to be a relatively recent developement, so if it isn't a spark problem caused by a bad spark plug wire ... it may be a stuck or leaky injector.

that's what made widebody/Thom nuts for awhile. He finally did an oil analysis to pinpoint the prob.

hello chaps, thanks for all the pointers...

I guess I should have put a link to my original post at the top - it was suggested that I "may have a stuck oil control ring." whach was causing the fouled plug and to try some techron as others have had success with the product. (I considered this to be a good move as the car has been standing for several months)

orig post

I have since started back with the ignition system and see if I can see any probs there - as mentioned above I will do new plugs, dizzy cap & rotor arm before I try techron equiv.

How often should leads be changed - I cant find record of them on previous bills so may be quite old - can I test if they are good or not, if so how

Joe & Craig,

Not only beer, but Stella Artois.

Jevvy,

If you search you may find some info on measuring resistance of the wires and the desired spec. I think Bentley may have this too. You can also mist some water on them and see if the revs go down, and you can look @ them in the dark (engine running) and see if there is any arcing.

You will also find various suggestions for which wires to buy.

hehe, sorry guys - went into Geordie shorthand - your right its Stella Artois!

Since you posted a cockney dictionary(not where im from) I thought I would post a proper one for Geordie words(Newcastle accent)

Geordie dictionary

and then a XXX version for the adults - beware, some of it is pretty rough

anyway, back to the car....
I have a full day free tomorow so I'm going to go through as much of the ignition that I can, replacing the cheap stuff and see if I can get the cables tested so if you are interested I will report back the results

Thanks again for your help
