911 door speaker mounting question
This is a stupid question but I have a '72 911 without any door speakers. I did some research on sizing and everyone recommends 5.25" speakers on this car. I settled on some Alpine SPR 136A speakers but the hole in my door is much larger than the speaker mounting tabs. It appears I need an adaptor bracket. What's the deal here?

Dunno, but my 73.5 had much bigger holes also. Visit a car stero intaller.

"Normally" the speakers are just fastened to the door panel itself, not the door frame. That's the way the factory speakers are attached. If you're really particular about your sound (or just feel better having your speakers fastened to metal instead of hardboard), you can fabricate a mounting plate to screw the speakers to the door frame. I made mine out of 1/4" thick aluminum.

I had two problems when I tried to install new speakers: the hole was too big and the window motor was in the way. Fellow pelican Mike Andrew provided a sketch of a bracket that solved both problems.
The door opening is 5 1/4 x 3 in which is too big for a 5 1/4 speaker but will accommodate a 6 1/2 in speaker except the window motor is in the way. I used a piece of .032 in brass from the hardware store which was easy to cut. You can find more pictures at Speaker Installation Frank |
