Where is this oil leaking from?
I am trying to figure out where oil is leaking from on my driver side case.
See attached image. The oil return tube is dry. The joint between the oil line and the case seemed to be dry. Any idea? ![]() thanks, anthony |

This is a perferct use for one of the flourscent oil additives for leak detection. Add the fluid, drive for a while, then hit with a black light and it will show you exactly where the leak is comming from. I will email you the product name later today.

I'm thinking the oil is coming from further up the motor. Old Tee has a good thought.

If I'm looking at the photo correctly, that nut is holding the tins in place. If you have oil on this nut, it's obviously coming from somewhere above it.
I've had a similar leak that turned out to be the through-bolt o-rings....ymmv. If I were you, I'd hope that it wasn't the o-rings. In order to fix it, you are going to have to remove the motor and strip the engine down to the pistons to remove the through-bolts and replace the o-rings. If you are going to do that, there are probably a few things that should get looked at "while you are in there"...(and we all know what kind of a slippery slope that is!).

I looked from the top of the engine and don't see any leak. Oil breather and pressure sender connections looks dry. The top of the cylinders is dry.
Where are the through bolts located? |

Oil blowing all over the place is hard to track. Don't even try. Here is what I promised: Interdynamics "Fluorescen Leak Detector Dye for All Automotive and Fuel systems. try www.id-usa.com. The package says "Suspected areas checked for leaks should appear Bright Yellow/Greeen under ultra violet light."
I have used this stuff on airplane engines and found cracks around cylinders and at case half seams where the sealant broke down. Best to do it at night. The leak really glows bright. Often this stuff can be found in larger auto parts stores were the people are knowlegable or at large truck repair facilities.

What year 911? From the case #, I am guessing early C2/4? If so, it might be the dreaded 964 leaky (no-gasket) cylinder heads? Otherwise, I'd begin the search with a thermostat and oil pressure switch inspection.

It's a 92 C2 with 90K miles. I've cleaned up the area and hopefully can put the car back together and drive to see where it leak.
I'll also check to see the local Autozone has anything similar to what Old Tee recommends. |
