Smile bigchillcar little project pics & question..

okay, i wanted to match the fan to my car color (roughly), but didn't want the expense of powder coating. i removed the housing and fan, stripped old paint off of them, primered, sanded and rattlecan painted them a metallic aluminum and metallic gold, both the heat resistant paint as used on engine blocks, etc. i'm thinking not bad for less than a $15 investment? i used many, many coats. question is i want you to look closely in the closeup of the fan..i'm still seeing what looks like traces of grease or oil inside my housing..any idea what the source of this might be and what it could mean? there was a film of this stuff there before i did the job and this much re-accumulated after just a couple hours of driving. also thought i'd attach an interior pic to show off the great 911 floormats i got back at xmas to match my tan interior. and maybe another pic or two of my '74 in the mix as well. thanks in advance for comments/remarks guys..

maybe fan belt fraying from a misalignment ?

hmm..misaligned fan belt. well, i actually replaced the fan belt with a new one when i put the fan/housing back in. that would mean it's been misaligned for a very long time. let me think on that one, ron. thanks.

okay..if it's getting frayed, i probably ought to be able to pick up or wipe off very fine black debris of the edges of it. i'll be checking that tomorrow. have you heard of alignment issues like this before, ron? i mean, it seems like it ought to be on the crank pulley just fine..and pretty darn sure my shims aren't crooked on the top pulley. i have the proper shims and the total of 6....4 in and 2 out. tension feels right too, so far..

also maybe a straight edge laying across the back end of the whole pully and see how it looks relative to the other.

I sure this happens more than we hear about it.

anyway it's a possibility.

broken rib was clean and no noticable fragments flying around & centered in the stack.. so

2 weeks ago I was able to drive out to meet bell & Overpaid Slacker about 450mi one way. The leaning on the spine in the seat prob seems to be over.

as long as I can ride the 911 the rest is bs.

thx

thanks, dmarv..it really cleans up the engine bay nicely for just a few bucks. if it doesn't hold up as well as powder coating, well..it's awfully cheap to repeat.

ron,
i felt around my fan and a/c belts and didn't find a speck of any sort of debris on them..BUT if i look down beneath the crank pulley, i see that there's still some oil/watery fluid down beneath it. perhaps there's a crankshaft pulley seal that's allowing small amounts of oil to pass and when the fan is turning, maybe it's sucking some of this out. when you examine the distribution of the oily/dirt pattern within the inside circumference of the housing, it's almost entirely on the lower half, becoming most dense at the very bottom, suggesting that this is a good place to consider as the source. i picture it as a little tornado streaming up from below the crank pulley now. any more ideas on this now?

It's likely just a little rubber from the new belt breaking in.

I have no hard info on what happens with a bad pully seal.

I guess a repair shop guy would see this happen?

if nobody jumps into this thread start a new one "Can pully seal oil leak cause oil in fan shroud ? "
