New 280hp Boxster S pictures
Porsche took the wraps off a new-generation Boxster tonight at the Pavillon Gabriel in Paris. This is the first redesign of the roadster since its introduction in 1996.
More "evolution, not revolution" is how the new Boxster was described by Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, president and C.E.O. of Porsche AG. At first glance it's difficult to see the differences between the new version and the first generation; however, 80 percent of the 2005 Boxster's components are new. When viewing the current and new Boxsters side by side, one notices the revised headlight design, larger wheels, larger air scoops, wider wheel arches and the wider stance, giving this second-generation Boxster a powerful look. And while the style is not obviously different, the drag coefficient has been lowered in both the base and S models. But the biggest news is the increased performance. The 2.7-liter 6-cylinder engine now produces 240 horsepower—12 more than the previous generation. The Boxster S gets 20 more horses, for a total output of 280 horsepower. The Boxster S also gets a new 6-speed manual gearbox. Acceleration to 62 mph in the S is now just 5.5 seconds, with top speed listed as 166 mph. With larger wheels and a wider stance, as well as improved torsional stiffness, the new Boxster should handle well. Porsche Stability Management (PSM) is now standard, with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) an available option. For even better stopping power, the Boxster S will now be available with Porsche's Ceramic Composite Brakes. Porsche's bean counters indicate that pricing for the new model in Europe will be 9 percent less than the comparably equipped 2004 model. ![]() ![]() |

I agree. It'd be interesting to see how the S performs against an early (3.4) 996.

IMHO..... another great improvement over a bland looking model that's been in production far too long.

I just cant get into those wheels. I would like to see a silver red with some retro looking wheels on it. Sounds like a really nice "bit of kit". Personally I would like a hard top S with paddle shift. Maybe some day.

Looks good, though I agree those wheels aren't the best choice.
I wonder what it weighs?

To say it resembles an MR2 is being more than facetious. It's utter nonsense. I see no resemblance.

When I saw the yellow pic above - I squinted, looked again and immediatley said...."MR2"?
But there is no doubt that it is a better car than the old Boxster -

looks better in person. The real crowd pleaser should be the coupe. It is due out in 06. I think we finally are gonna see that boxter getting tracked etc. Besides with a starting price of about 35K "YEAH RIGHT", it should be a good seller, anyway we'll see....

I agree it looks a little like the MR2, but didn't the boxster come out long before the current generation of MR2? I would think that Toyota mimicked the styling of the boxster intentionally to make their MR2 look like a more upscale car.

I like it, I think I might be due for an upgrade. Well in a few years, no more new cars for me ever.

I think I'd be a fan if it had MORE of the pontoon curviness of the 550s
the rear and front fenders should be more distinguished from the middle of the car...obviously production costs and packaging is probably why they don't do it... quick glance...looks like a 997 convertable...those new owner are gonna get their panties in a bunch.... |

BTW, I think that I'd enjoy owning either one by the reviews that I've heard. But the chances of me having enough money for a CGT are pretty slim while in a few years I should be able to pick up a used MR2 as a play car for small money.

Looks good, but I think they should have kept more distinction from it and the 997. Maybe they should have kept the 996 (Turbo) headlight design for use on the boxster, and left the new round headlight design exclusively for the new "911". Also, the rear gill-vent (re)design looks out of place, and doesn't flow with the lines of the car IMO.

Ok, The Boxster came out before the current COPYCAT MR2 design. So you have that backwards.
