Porsche Crest Hey new owner with a quick question

Hey all, I am now a prowd and happy owner of a 1979 911 SC. Its in amazing shape and drives like nothing I have ever drivin. I finally own my dream car! Anyway I just had a quick question, when I bought it I had it checked out by my parents mechanic and he said that it would need brake work very soon and then went on to say it would cost something like a million billion (about $2000). Is this an accurate price quote or should I seak another. And likewise when he told me this he said the rears would need the engine to be dropped in order to be worked on. This I found hard to believe but I really didnt know much about it. I mean I have a bit of mechanical experience with suspension and brakes, would a brake job be too much for me to handle and does my mechanic have a accurate claim on the job? Any help would be appriciated.

I feel sorry for your parents if this is their mechanic. This guy is trying to rip you off. 911's and particularly the brakes are suprisingly easy to work on. You might want to do a bit of research and see what really needs to be done first, and try doing it yourself.

If you have some experience with brakes, go get a copy of Wayne's book 101 Porsche Projects and do it yourself this winter and save $1500 to $1800.

I believe that almost any reputable brake place could do it with the exception of rebuilding the calipers. The only trick there is the installation of the cylinder needs to be properly oriented.

Pick up the book and you'll have all the information you need to know. Well worth the investment.

Your mechanic is a retard. Give me his number and I will call him personally and tell him.
Did he ask you if you would like his cold hands on you back? .... it wont really hurt.

Your 911 brakes can be changed by a 4 year old. If you mastered the square peg, square hole thingy at the ripe old age of 2..... you have the skills to change the brakes!

Get in touch with some local p-car owners or your local PCA chapter, they can direct you to the right mechanic or help assess your situation. You sound a little naive, so looking to those with experience should help your pocket book a little.

Geez you guys...he just needs new pads and a good bleeding right? No need to overwhelm him with the upgrades (yet! )

OK...was at the track on Wednesday...had crappy pads in there and they were heating up...

So I had a fresh set of Ferodos, came off the track, got the car on jack stands, swapped pads, bled calipers...wheels back on and off to burn in the new pads..

Elapse time: less than an hour and that included 15 minutes of trying to find a stupid punch that I left at home. Of course this is me rushing to get it done before my group is up next...

So all this guy needs is a brake job right?

With a little help I rebuilt my own. These guys and previous threads will walk you right thru it. Have fun, don't let knucklehead mechanics ruin it.

Uhhhh, given his "guestimate" price for a "brake job", I would have very little confidence in anything else he does, including "checking out" your new ride. This may be a good time (before you spend money on un-needed repairs or fail to do needed repairs) to have the car evaluated by a real Porsche mechanic. I'm sure, if you ask, someone on this board will give you the name of a qualified shop in your area.

All that aside, congratulations on the new car. You enjoy it already, but wait, it just gets better and better.

Good choice on model too (SC!!).
