high pitched whine after re-wire / new alternator

Just replaced the alternator in my 1979 911SC - while I was working on the 'trecity, I decided to clean up some of the wiring mess that was left over after the PO replaced the fuel injection with webers.

Everything went smoothly - but (isn't there always a "but"?) when I put the ignition in 'run', I notice a high-pitch sound from the engine compartment that I don't think was there before. It's hard to identify where it's coming from, but I think it's from the CDI module.

I'm pretty sure it's _not_ the fuel pump (I'm familiar with that noise).

The car seems to be running fine - haven't taken it out on the road yet.

I do notice that the CDI module seems to get warm - is this normal?

The PO removed all the rear defogger relays/etc - so none of that is back there anymore.

any other ideas what could be the cause of this?

Unplugged CDI: no whine.

Plug it back in : whine-o-matic

Imminent failure, or normal operation?
