Question Thump from rear axle.

Hi all!

My '87 Targa has developed a somewhat of a thumping noise coming from the rear at low speeds. When driving above 40-50 mph the thumping disapears.
When driving at low speeds it's just a constant "thump, thump, thump". I can even feel slight vibration through the chassis. Before I get it up in the air this weekend, is there anything in particular I should look for?

Thanks!
Eli.

Eli, I think you should get up in the air right away.

wish I could....booked all day tomorrow . Drove the 912 today, probably won't have a chance to look until Sunday.

My concern is that it's a CV joint at worst , don't want to drive the car until I get it sorted out.

Heard a lot of stories lately about axles breaking at speed throwing folks out of their cars, etc. With the top off and my sporadic use of the seatbelts, I can just see myself starting the next thread....

It's the CV boot disintegrating and hitting against the heat exchanger in the case of the inner boot, or the trailing arm in the case of the outer. Jack the car up and rip the torn rubber off.

CV joint, or loose cv bolts.

Ok,

I had the car up and checked all CV boots. All are intact and looked almost new. I went through the records and sure enough CV boots were replaced at the same time a clutch job was performed about 20K miles back.
Drove the car some more, the noise can only be heard when going in second gear about 20 MPH, it's distinctive whirring coming from the drive train. Almost sounds like a bad wheel bearing, except the wheel bearing noise ususally doesn't go away....
Any ideas? Anyone local willing to lend an ear?

One good way to check a bearing that you think is failing is to drive on a curvy road that is close to home and make some zig zag type turns and you may hear if it is a bad bearing. When turning left the weight would be on the right side and when turning right the weight would be on the left. This is just a simple way to test it yourself first. A parking lot is good for this type of test also. Hope this helps some.
