'71 911 shift linkage vs. '72?????

I'm going to be installing a 2.2L and a 901 gearbox in my '72 911. I still have the shifter and all the linkage in my '72, what I'm wondering is will this work with th 901 gearbox or should I get the linkage from the '71 to use in my car? Also, are there any differences in the shifter itself? The person I'm buying the engine and gearbox from is going to a 915 gearbox so if they are different I can swap for $0, I just don't want to tear into it if I don't need to. I would appreciate some of the expertise that I know is out there. Thanks!!

The shifters are most definely different!

So I will need to swap the shifter and all of the linkage back to the gearbox?

YOu will need the shifter assembly and the shifter rod. The shifter rod is a different length than the 915 version. Make sure to install it in the tunnel before the drivetrain. It must go in first!!

WHY do this, That is a step backwards.

jpnovak, thanks for the tip.

cvfncrew, I'm putting this engine and gearbox in my car that I bought as a roller. My long term plan is to locate a 3.0 or 3.2, or possibly build a 2.7RS spec, it's just not in my budget right now, hence the 2.2 and 901 gearbox. I know what you mean though. I'll just be happy when my car is able to move under it's own power. :-)

Glad I found this thread. He is getting my 2.2 and 901. I will get the rest of the linkage out. Now comes my plan to build a beast of a motor. Was really leaning towards a 3.2 short stroke with a turbo. however considering building a n/a short stroke with the turbo case, 66mm crank and 100mm pistons? Hi revving and lots'o power. anybody have a case and or 66mm counter balanced crank and "s"cams?
