UK category D write off.....should i buy it?

im looking at a 78 SC on saturday and thoght id Hpi it beforehand. everything came up as it should other than the fact that its a Category D insurance write off. for you americans that means that in the words of the hpi check it is a "Category D Insurance Loss. Vehicle Damaged But Repairable - Insurer Decided Not To Repair
06/01/01"

what now?

You need more information if you are going to consider it at alll. The damage could have involved the front end, the rear end, the roof, or undercarraige. Any of these could cause problems with either suspension alignment or body panel gap issues, or all the above. It also depends on your plans for the use ( track, street, etc.).
Find out more about it and then decide if you want to take the risk. Remember, if you go to sell later, the new buyer will be asking you the same questions...

ehm , how bad is it , and how much do you wanna/can do yourself?

also , there's plenty of 78SC's around... why bother with a write off?
any damage on the chassis i guess would be mighty difficult , read expensive , to repair...

there may be parts to score if you can get it cheap
but these days everybody is on the lookout for cheap parts wrecks, some people have businesses that do just that... so better move fast if you want it for the parts...

i want to use the car as a track/street car. it is in (apparently) good condition with a 3.2 carrera engine fitted and turbo arche. Im looking to build a 73 RSR so the rear arches are a bonus. the engine can be sold as im building a turbo engine for it and its not that dear so im thinking if its straight then does it matter that much if im building a replica?
