What is this?

Not sure what this is but it's tucked up next the the window antena box in the far back of the hood on the passenger side.

I'm trying to find the cause of a no spark condition and ran across this in searching for an alarm system.

I believe the factory alarm is underneath the fresh air blower.

Kees Thanks, Learned another one.

I suspect that I had an overcharge condition ( lights got bright a couple of times) that I have read about that could short the factory alarm, assuming I have one.

Heard that will immediately cause a no start no spark condition. I haven't used the alarm (if I have one) but I do have a key switch on the end of the drivers door. Once I locate it I'll try to bypass it to see if I then get my spark back.

John,

The disabling instructions are in this long thread ... the two Blue [one may be Blue with another stripe, Brown or Red or Black ... bur both ar side-by-side on the alarm connector, and both have a Blue major color] wires need to have a jumper inserted into the socket after the alarm unit is unplugged. They may be labeled 61 & 61A, or A, depending on the part number ... but they are side-by-side at the 10-pin connector.

Help !! 964 Alarm Will Not Disengage

I have the blower out. Just the plastic duct housing. Do I need to remove the duct housing as well?

John,

I believe so ... several Pelicans have said getting to the module is a major PITA! And a two-hour job, too.

Drats,

I'm trying my very best to get to this resolved. My son is coming in Sunday from the air force. He has never seen this car and I would love to take a long drive with him and catch up on some well missed father and son time.

Back at it...

AS per the following instructions I'm a little confused.

Fabricate a short jumper, 3"- 5" long, 14 ga or 16 ga wire ... install male 0.25" Faston tabs at both ends. The jumper goes in the connector at the mating locations for terminals '61' and 'A' on the alarm module ... should be blue wires going to those locations.

I have two terminals (61, both blue) and one teminal ( E / A) . The terminals on the alarm module are males and the terminals on the jack that plugs into the module are females.

Do I jump the blues on the white jack, if so, then I won't be able to plug the jack back in.

Sorry for being a pain...

John,

Yes, with the jumper installed you won't be able to plug the alarm module back in ... but, if the car starts that means the module is defective and needs to be repaired or replaced!

At least you will be able to use your car!

Just tried to start the car with the alarm bypassed and still no spark. I guess I can recheck the gap of the sensors at the flywheel but I clearly hear the injectors pulsing and the fuel pump running, just no spark.

I didn't think the fuel pump would run unless the DME saw the flyweel turning. Am I missing something?

John,

If the injectors are pulsing, yes, both flywheel sensors are working.

If you have a 12 Volt test lamp ... test the positive side of the coil for +12 Volts with ignition key on. Then, check the negative side of the coil for pulses ... blinking light while cranking.

A timing light can test for spark output at the coil or distributor.

If you have +12 Volts and pulses at the coil, then the driver transistor in the DME is working. If your coil has no output at that point, it is probably bad.

If anyone has a DME open and can get me the color bands on the two resistors shown. I will attempt a repair.

Here is a pic:

Last week I had a shorted heater on a bad O2 sensor. That took it's toll on the DME before I found the shorted heater. I will be going over all my fuse sizes as well.

Very well be a lost cause but if I can get the resistor values it's worth a try.

Here is a pic I have of the DME open to that area, I can't make out any color bands on those resisters.
Pic is from two years ago, 1988 911.
