911 steering problem

I was driving my working colleagues 911 , -77. He said the steering has become hard.

So I went for a drive , and yes it was hard. I needed both hands to steer , and especially comparing my own 912E , there is a HUGE difference. My own car is light , responsive and centers easily.

This 911 does not. It is really hard to turn and it does not center after releasing the steering wheel.

What might be wrong ? He also said , that this is a new problem. He said it came after he came back from his summer vacation.

I lifted the front up , I could not see anything wrong. Naturally the steering was light when the front wheels were of the ground.

BTW : the car is not driven daily , not even weekly.

Any ideas ??

And Thanks !

Erkki

Check the Tire pressure?
Did he hit any big potholes recently? If so, alignment might now be way off.

Oh yes , sorry ! Forgot to mention , I did check the Tire Pressure. It was low on both , but I did put some more air in. I think to 29-30psi.

Did not help.

Potholes , hmmmmm , got to ask. He DID NOT mention anything about driving to any potholes but..... it does not mean that he didnīt......

Sounds like the steering rack is toast; when mine went, it was harder to steer in one direction than the other.

the u-joint shaft between column and rack can get stiff too.
