how do I get Bilstein to rebuild my rear shocks?
 

I was doing a search for shocks and I came across a few threads discussing the ability to have Bilstein shocks/struts rebuilt or revalved for $50-70/shock. Is this service still available? I visited the Bilstein website, but couldn't find any information concerning this service.

Has anybody done this recently and how do I contact Bilstein to set this up?

When I contacted Koni directly about rebuilding my rear stock shocks from a 1977 911 (factory koni w/ porsche #"s on them), they said they were not rebuildable...had to buy new ones. So I found good used bilsteins cheap and threw them on. They feel great and saved $.

They said that some of the rear shocks are rebuildable...some are not. Probably the same w/ Bilstein.

Just call Bilstein and they will direct you accordingly. It's not a highly advertised service.

You can do it several ways. I used SmartRacing Products. They will send them to Bilstein and use the formula they best derive for your car, (weight, torsion bars, driving use). Cost was about $85/shock. Most Bilstein shocks can be used, (sports, hd's) no matter what condition. Others have sent them directly to Bilstein and let them use the formula to revalve. Slightly cheaper. Either way, you get a custom taylored shock that rides better, handles better, and improved your car. Highly recommended.

Hope it help! BTW, valving is a key factor on what you will be doing with the car. Mine is primarilly a track car. Also HDs and Sports are the same. The valving is what makes them different. A used set goes for around 50.00 on the board. Good Luck!

I have Bilsteins at all four corners. I believe the right rear is leaking and completely shot. The car bottoms out very easily on that side.

Is there a "default" setting for the revalving? My car is used on weekends and sometimes becomes my daily driver when one of my other "classics" breaks down. I don't track the car and some of the roads in my area are horrible, so I don't want rock hard -- just mild compliance and control at high speeds. Thanks for the responses.

Tell him exactly what you want. You can have them re-valved back to stock, or tell him what you're doing with the car and he'll advise on a setting. I had mine re-valved to the club sport settings.
