One of the captions in the article says it went through a "frame-off" rebuild.

From reading Mr. Wilkinson's book, it's obvious that he only knows about half of what he's talking about. Quite a few statements in the book are general, blanket statements that people who don't know much about Porsches believe, but aren't true.

If you want to read a similar book by someone who knows what they are talking about, pick up one of Peter Egan's books.

While I agree Stephan's book is not a Wayne's engine rebuild book, it is still a fun read and I could relate to more than a few of the problems he had in his restoration. By the way, Stephan posts on this board and is a nice guy. You should find the thread he posted years before the book came out where, in response to a question regarding DIY car painting, he describes painting the car that is the subject of his book, by disassembling the car and painting it in his barn! Stephan is like a lot of us guys when it comes to working on our cars, he just dives right in.

I'm not getting on Mr. Wilkinson about the caption error. I'm sure he didn't write the caption of the popular mechanics website!

Hi Steve:

LOL,..I'd take issue with your assessment about Mr. Wilkinson,...

Actually, he DOES know quite a bit about these cars.

He is simply a VERY hands-on fellow and assumes nothing. He has never been afraid to ask all kinds of questions to educate himself and not accept hearsay or Internet BBS postings as fact,.... I had the pleasure of working with him on his 911SC project car over a 2 year period.

Thats all part of being a professional journalist.

P.S,.....I know Mr. Egan as well and he too, is a very sharp fellow.

Steven has been around a long time. He was writing for all kinds of car rags before I was born. He actually wrote a writeup about the sorta obscure 912E when it was new.

Moreover, he's still writing and writing well. I think he now does a regular column for Conde Nast. What's more, I'd bet that most automotive journalists at the popular new car rags probably couldn't restore a car to save their lives.

and didn't the "frame-off" comment come up at the beginning of the article where he was debating which type of car to restore and the extent of the planned resto? I don't think, at that point, he was referring to a 911 at all.

Dave,

It came on the 2nd page of the pop sci article. Here's a screenshot:

I think he's using the term "frame off" as a code word for ground-up resto rather than a statement of fact.
