Electroplate exhaust tips ??
....can stainless steel exhaust tips be electroplated black ?
If so, can the tips ( mine are welded-on) be kept on the car during the process? You see so many Lexus' and such with their brand name badges electroplated gold ( probably done "in-place" without removing the emblems)....just wondering. Wil |

Almost all electroplating is done by dipping in a solution where currenty is applied and either a electro/chemical reaction creates a by-product that is deposited onto the metal or where one part of the solution is deposited. (You probably know this already
)I don't see how this can be done practically when attached to a car. To turn steel black you have to go with black oxide or parkerizing. Perhaps there's some type of black chrome that would work.

Maybe if you tilt your car back far enough you can dip your tips into this...... http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=251&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=plating
Don't know how it'll hold up in the heat though. (But this doesn't answer your original question as this isn't electroplating)

As a further "help" along the lines of my original question.. I believe there were home-brew kits that could work along these lines ( gold plating car badges, and such)...that I thought might work for these tips if available in black. If so, there's then the pro option done in someone's shop....
Just wondering aloud ...... Wil
