Recommendations on Auto Shipping Companies
I need to ship a car from California to Florida and I would like some recommendations on a good auto shipping company. I trust this group’s opinions more that I do the Better Business Bureau site. The car is a 03 Mustang Mach 1 I bought for my son and I am thinking about an open trailer to keep the costs down.
What companies have you personally used with good results? I guess I would also like to hear about the ones to stay away from. I have heard some horror stories, so personal experience goes along way. Thanks.

Do a Google Search on "auto transport"...it will get you a webpage that will ask for your information and you get quotes from 10+ companies...
AFTER negotiate and consider stand by if you are not in a hurry.

Thanks, I have done that already. There are plenty of shipping companies out there. That's why I would like to hear about someones personal experience on who they used.

Don't make the mistake and cover the car while on transport.
The cover will flap in the wind and wear away the paint. I have heard many complaints of this. Enclosed transport is best. I don't know what you can do to protect the paint in transit in an open transporter....be careful if the car has nice paint! It is cheaper if you can find a hauler that is on the way back from a delivery and can "back haul" your car for less so as not to go back empty. Good luck. Joe in Santa Barbara |

Then do a google on Brian Buxton Motorsprts...he has a site with high end transporters....most of the low end companies are simply brokers. They only act as middle men for contractors.
Expect to pay a premium for enclosed and site to site transport without a middleman broker.

Try some searches here & on Rennlist.
Intercity is highly mentioned but expensive. DAS is another I have seen mentioned often. I shipped via an open carrier (but CDN company) Florida to Toronto. Car arrived dirty but no damage, no stonechips & on time. For the CDN's, I used Hansen's. It went Pompano Beach-Miami-Texas-Port Huron MI border crossing-Toronto-my driveway. Ian

I have had DAS recommended before. Does DAS stand for anything?

I never knew about this, which is shipping by rail car. The site says enclosed. Unfortuately, they don't seem to have a route to FL.
I'm going to keep this in mind, but I assume this is for running vehicles only. |

Yeah, we have one called SeaRail for CDN to US & vice versa. You have to get the car to/from the railyard or pay for transport & yes, I believe it has to run. The base price is good, except you have to factor in these extra transport costs. There can also be an insurance issue, because you are dealing with multiple carriers. Also note, they can't be too low - one told me 4 inches clearance at least - this applies to truck or rail.

I used a company called Mario Express out of Phoenix. They showed up when they said they would, and got the car from Virginia to Arizona in less than 5 days. They were cheap, too.
I'd use them again.

Thanks for the recommendations. Any more car shipping experiences and things I should look out for?

ABLE AUTO TRANSPORT QUOTE
Tuesday, February 25, 2003 Shipping Information: Origin: Boise, ID Destination: Raleigh, NC 1979 Porsche 911 Targa Open Carrier Deposit: $100 Total Cost: $900 These guys were brokers. Independent truckers subcontract from them. BBB had no complaints at the time that hadn't been resolved favorably. I had no problem and they were cheaper than most. In retrospect it seems like a crap shoot. You could pay more and get a closed trailer and I think it will still feel like a crap shoot. The car was very dusty but cleaned up just fine. I don't think I'd do it again. I'd buy local. within a couple of hundred miles.

Find a race team headed to Sebring sometime in the future and see if you can buy a spot on their truck...
