heat exchanger stud
based on all the other threads on this topic you'd think i can't get it out, but no...actually i just noticed one stud recently backed out all on its own. the one right by the sump cover. I've seached both the forum and the parts catalog and looked thru haynes, but can't find a special stud or nut. Can i just run to the hardware store and buy some, or do i need something special, if so what?
thanks, jason and just in case, 2.4L CIS, stock exchangers. and PS, does anyone know why the stud/nut combo vs a regular bolt? |
Jason,
It's just a standard M6.00 x 1.00 stud & nut ... you need to use Red High-Strength Loctite on it ... after cleaning the bore with a degreaser compound such as Brakleen. You can cut the head off a standard DIN 8.8 bolt and dress the cut end with a file to make a replacement stud ... The factory engineers chose a stud so that loosening and tightening forces wouldn't be working on the threads in the Mg case ... much better to be acting on steel stud threads! |
thanks, hardware store at lunch,
jason |
