Alright....

Shifter plate
On my '74, when I went to change out the bushing on the end of the shifter (Ball Cup Shift Bushing at base of shift lever) and the bushing underneath the assembly (Shift Rod Bushing in Tunnel Behind Shifter) I noticed there is a 1/2 plexiglass plate that the shifter housing sits on. Is this normal? Or should the shifter housing mount directly to the floor?
Thanks, Stephen |

I have never found a plastic plate on a shifter. But, I haven't worked on that many models either. Doesn't sound right. You don't see a spacer on these diagrams either:

I agree with Randy, it may be there to give clearence to the tunnel from the longer shifter shaft, Randy

The reason I am asking is because I have having problems going in to third gear. This is a newly rebuild tranny with about 500 miles on it. I seem to have to double clutch to get it in. It does not grind, just does not engage. I replaced all the shifter bushings and I have a new shift coupler assembly. I was just wondering if this plate could be causing the issue.
It could be the shift coupler assembly is not adjusted perfectly. I am going to try to rejust it. The lower gears (2nd 4th reverse) seem to have no problems. So perhaps I just need to adjust the shift coupler assembly. Does that sound like a good place to start? Thanks, Stephen

I have that expensive gated custom shifter that WEVO makes in my 78 911 w/ the 915 tranmission. I was having problems getting the shifter to go either into 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th. I could get it to go either in the top or the bottom but not shift through both. After weeks of adjusting and replacing bushings in the front under the shifter #45 and #44 I finally talked with WEVO.
They sent me a gasket for the tranmission plate so I could drop it and check the shifter fork. It was loose. I tightened it back up and then was able to adjust the shift coupling in the back #49 where I could shift through all the gears smoothly. |

I finally got around to removing the shifter plate spacer I had posted a question about. When I did, the original screws were so long that it hit the shifter rod. I put some shorter screws in and I was not able to even move the stick in neutral. So, I put the spacer back in place....
I did replace my fluid with Swepco and it does shift smoother. I think I have come to the conclusion that I can not drive for $$%#. So, perhaps after a couple thousand miles I will get the hang of it.

Haing in there. I drove my SC for three months before I "got the haing" of my 915. Be careful with shifting, pay attention, don't hurry the shifts. Try to find the "right" technique and stick with it. These cars and the tranmsissions in particular take a while to get right.
Good luck, Alan

A change in the shift KNOB can also help.
Be sure it is all aligned right at the coupler - search on this for many posts. Or go back to the original stock shifter. |
