G50 clutch squeal

My 89 Carerra Targa just hit 89K miles with the original clutch. The other day while merging onto the freeway I heard a short squeal when disengaging the clutch after shifting into 4th, and again in 5th.

Sometimes it happens when downshifting into other gears, sometimes I don't hear it at all. Haven't really pinpointed exactly when it is happening.

Is this a symptom of early clutch failure? Other than the noise, the clutch seems to operate normally.

Does the pedal require more effort? Also a clutch will complain if you shift too early. ie. You shift @ 1500 RPM and the clutch really wants 200 RPM - I've had this on my 87'.

The throwout bearing is constantly spinning on these cars but maybe it has reached a point in its life where it is just starting to squeal under load.

The only other thing that I can think of is unbelievably unlikely and expensive that I won't even mention it.

Thanks for your help!
Everything seems normal, besides the squeal. I've heard it while shifting at various RPM's. Weight and feel of the clutch is the same.

One other thing that I noticed was after I washed the car yesterday there was some black dust (rubber?) that had gathered around the rear wheels. Don't know if it's related or not...I've only had the car for a month so its hard to tell what is normal and what isn't.

Are there any other checks I can do to narrow down the problem?

Sounds like normal brake dust. Use the brakes and it is a normal part of cleaning the car. There will usually be a fair bit more dust on the front rims. They do most of the stopping.

Thanks guys. Well... I'm going to take her in regardless of the clutch situation just so I can start my own records and scheduled maintenance. Should be a frightening/entertaining first visit to the local shop!

Is there a DIY package on Pelican for the G50 clutch? Everything I see so far is for the 915.

Mattxbart,

FWIW, I have written a tech article on replacing the clutch on a G50 Carrera. The article list the parts that are needed. If you like a copy, let me know.
