Alternator fan centering
My 11 blade fan seems to hit the lower housing occasionally, causing a horrible noise. Is there any way to center the fan in the housing? The tolerance seems to be very tight.
Thanks

Possibly not good. You may have cracks in the housing and when the fan strap is tightened it makes the fan housing oblonged shaped. Other possibility is bearings in the alternator going out. There is no "adjustment" to center the fan. I would investigate the two items I listed.

Yep, either somethings broke, breaking, or wearing out. You'll need to check the stuff that Kurt mentioned.

I don't know if this will help you any, but.....
When I changed my alternator several weeks back, I noticed that the fan would nick the sides when manually spun. There are 5-6 bolts that mount the alternator to the back of the fan mount. If you tighten the bolt oposite of where it is touching it will pull the fan back and away from the edge that is touching. What you may find is that some of your mounting bolts have worked loose and just need to be tightened. By tightening them all evenly it will keep the fan centered in the housing. Otherwise refer to the responses above, you may have something else wrong. Don
