Interior covers for cabs: questions for owners

Hey guys

A search in the archives shows a few people have these, and one person had an ill-fitting one on a targa. I have an 84 cab that I park within vision of my window at work sometimes, but the sun beats down on it, and sunny new england weather can turn bad fast.

I was wondering if anyone that has/uses one could comment on:

1) Where you got yours, and what you paid
2) Whether it is easily attached versus just putting up the roof
3) How well it fits, whether it leaks, etc.
4) Any comments/warnings/kudos on the ones out there (ie purchased from vendor X and it didn't fit.)

Thanks!

What type are you looking for?? I have one that I could only find from Performance Parts 3 years ago. It was about $65. It is a light wieght waterproof cover that hooks to the edge of the Cab top and secures with velcro straps around the door handles, mirrors, and wipers. I works well, is fairly compact, is easy to put on and remove, and covers the interior completely. It is definately easier that putting the top up and down on a manual Cab. Mine has only been on one time during a real rain storm and it didn't leak at all. The only issues with mine are the passenger side mirror strap and one of the wiper straps don't really line up correctly. It doesn't cause a problem securing it though.
There is a picture of my car with the cover on about halfway through the thread listed below.
Page 32 of the recent Panorama has a similar Ad picture from www.autochic.com
www.sportscarsolutions.com also has 2 covers. One called a Cockpit cover and the other called a Half Cover.

Thanks Jim

Yes, the kind that cover, with the velcro straps. I was looking to get feedback like yours, about things not lining up, or not fitting properly. Another poster on another thread said the perf. Products one was a bad fit, but for $65, it would probably work just fine.

Thanks,

DMA

I tried unsucessfully to find one, ended up getting one at a swap for $20. It doesn't fit right - the velcro straps are nowhere near the door handles - but it keeps the sun off. I hold it on my trapping it under the door.

I'd love to find the right one.

i've got one of those perf. prod. covers for my 85, it's not bad at all. the one item i didn't like is the tabs that go under the deck lid.
i took some snaps & put on in place of the tenax fastners so all you do is drape it over the windshield & under the wiper blades, strap the mirrors & doors then snap the back. mine is a daily driver in vegas all year long, & i use mine every chance i get.
as for rain, came down pretty good one morning, had water setting up on it as it's not that tight across, but it didn't leak.
after work you can whip that puppy right off no sweat!

The alignment of the straps is more annoying than a problem. The passenger side mirror strap is set like the drivers side but the mirror is farther back on the door. With the wiper straps, one will line up and one will be off. Which one depends on if you reversed your wipers like I did.
But like you said, for the price it works well. I don't know if you can still get them from Performance but it did take several weeks to get it shipped.

David--

I have a Targa and got mine from www.bigskycarcovers.com. Fit is excellent and much better than the one I tried from Performance Products. Performance sold one that (they said) fit both Targas and Cabs, but it didn't work on my Targa.

When I bought mine several years ago, I found that there is a difference between the covers for cabs and Targas, particularly with respect to glass coverage and the like.

Resistance to weather is great - I once had to use mine to cover the interior during a pretty significant rain fall (left the top at home 10 miles away) and not a drop of water came into the interior.

Mine have the tabs that go under the engine lid - very handy for making sure that the cover can't walk away (unless someone wants to cut the tabs, of course).

Don't remember what I paid, but $65 seems reasonable.

Thanks again guys

I really don't want to have to open the engine lid every time I use the cover either. Do the straps stay there, or do you need to pop it every time?

Doug Petty: My top has two snaps on the back, at 6 and 8 oclock... is that what you snapped it to?

I formed mine to make a shallow hook, like a sideways J, that catches the rear edge of the top.

You don't need to use the straps in the back if you don't choose to. They just lay on engine lid when not in use.

Oh, so the hooks are bendable, ie have some backbone to them, not just cloth/nylon?

ROFL

Should have named this "the ultimate interior cover thread"

Thanks again guys

I have one of these covers that you guys are taking about for sale if any of you guys wants it. It didn't fit well so I never used it. I'm sure one of you guys can make it work for you if you're intersted.

It's grey and has straps but doesn't look quite right. I can't take pictures until Friday though so let me know if anyone wants it.

I'll take $20 shipped to your door.

It's like this one below:

The "hooks" are a cloth covered piece of soft but stiff metal approx. 1.5 wide X 4 long X 1/16 inches thick.

Just another data point here: I ordered a targa interior cover from calcarcover.com, and it didn't fit at all. Normally their fabrics, construction, and fit are excellent, and I would highly recommend them. Turned out that the cover I got was for a 996 Targa (glass), even though their website just said "911 targa". They don't make one for the original 911 targa, despite how many more there are out there compared with a 996 glass roofed targa.
