Did 73 2.7RS's ever leave the factory with fibreglass bonnets? (ie. trunk lids)
I'm re-classing my rally car and am trying to work out if I can use my steel or f/g bonnet. I'm limited to whatever came from the factory " in the day".

I believe all that had ducktails had them in fibreglass. It could be specified with a normal lid.
EDIT: Peter Morgan in Original Porsche 911 states "On the M471, glass-reinforced plastic was used for both the bumpers and the rear engine cover, which had an aluminum support frame." Can you even get a non-F/G ducktail? Last edited by klaucke; 09-29-2004 at 05:24 PM.. |

yep, we have boots (in the back) and bonnets (in the front)
although for a 911 engine lid seems to be ok also for the rear now back to the question - were there fibreglass front bits??

I am 99.99999% positive a 73 RS has a steel hood. I think for lightweight versions in the 90's they didn't even use F/G, they used aluminum.

Thanks JK - that's what my research points to as well. Pity, my steel bonnet feels like it weighs a ton in comparison to my f/g one.

A FG bonnet/hood will save 15 lbs. over a stock steel one. CF might save more.
The RS used a lighter steel for the hood -- 0.7 mm steel. That would save you something -- but is it worth the cost of fabrication? I doubt too many real RS owners will sell you their bonnets. Anyway, good luck. |

The 73 RSR did have a glass hood. You can argue it is legal because the RSR was homoligated from the RS. Good luck.

The 911R also had fiberglass boots and bonnets. Don't know if it would help your argument. The ST used aluminum. I think the RS was all steel.
