You can see where the nubs in the throat have been ground down, Other than that I have different versions of the above shot

Here is a 964 rear modified for 3" trailing arms, same sort of mod to the throat, but the ears remain and are redrilled

Yes, the Big Reds are aptly named

This is the 993tt rear, 965 rear and M rear

Bill, got any shots of the holes made in the caliper for the adaptor. Thats the part that makes me most nervous, milling into the caliper.

MotoSook 10-06-2004 07:47 PM

John,

I'm with you. Drilling into the caliper is the nervous part. The adapter will be easy. I suppost once I take the calipers apart ans cut the ears off, it'll become obvious, but any information before the operation is good to have....

Why go 944t? The 993's are so much easier to adapt - around the same price - nothing to drill

MotoSook 10-06-2004 07:59 PM

Jeremy, If I could find someone to trade 993 calipers for my 951 calipers, I'd be right there!

Cause its what I've got on the shelf, no other reason.

Bill Verburg 10-07-2004 01:29 PM

I highly recommend the 993 front and 965 rear caliper combo on 930 rotors. They are so much easier to deal w/ and give much better results than the 964s

The 993 calipers aren't that difficult to get a hold of or expensive

JeremyD 10-07-2004 05:40 PM

I bought a set of 951 calipers off ebay fronts and rears - then started doing research on what it would take - I read just about everything that Bill had to say on the whole Brake subject. (kinda spooky, eh Bill?)

Anyway - I sold my 951 the next day.

which rotors are you using with the radial mounted 964/944T calipers?

armandodiaz 10-08-2004 05:26 AM

Here's a dump questions which I've always woundered about when talking about caliper prices.

Instead of buying used calipers or these expensive kits, why not just purchase the calipers from an autoparts store(eg. Advance Auto Parts) then purchase the rotors and adapters seporately?

From my research, you would end up spending approx. $2300 total, instead of the $3500 one could spend. And the calipers are lifetime guarantee.

front calipers: $160.00 ea
rear calipers: $175.00ea

MotoSook 10-08-2004 06:40 AM

Armando: that was discussed in my rant thread about the $59.99 caliper fron the FLAP :) I might just try that.

One would usually expect to use the early 944T rotor (as per the VCI kit). Its 4mm thicker and a little larger diameter than the 3.2 rotor and the same size as a 964 rotor.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this thought.

I remember reading about a narrow body 964 front rotor will work on a Carrera if the outer edge of the front hub is shaved. No other mods required. Is this true? Does anyone have any experience in this?

I have seen pictures of it on this forum but have no experience. They were in one of the major multipage threads regarding brake upgrades and it was perhaps a 993TT disc, but the hub mods were the same. I chose to use the 944T disc with 5mm bearing spacer because it had been done before (see the VCI kit) and I knew it would work.

Hi mr.bch
What calipers are your adapters for? Do you have the plans in PDF format?

Great forum btw. I've been a lurker for a while.

mr.bch 10-16-2004 03:36 PM

996 normally aspirated. I forgot I was going to post the print I made up at my work. Bill V always does such a good job of posting brake info. Problem is, there are so many different combinations....

Mathew 10-17-2004 03:47 AM

996 calipers are the same as the red Boxster S ones aren't they? I have a set of these I would like to fit but the price of the adapters is prohibitive. If I had the specs I could probably make them myself.

yes, 'S' and non turbo 996s have the same part number, from my research.
I'll dig out my file when I get to work tomorrow.
