So what exactly have I got here?

The number is 6550355. 'Original Porsche 911' doesn't list it at all. 'The Used 911 Story' says its a '75 Carrera 2.7. It's in a '75 911S Silver Anniversary. It's got a green fan shroud which, as far as I can tell, is green fiberglass not paint - so that would be consistent with it being a mid-year 2.7 but certainly no REAL indicator of identity (right?). What do you folks (who actually have a clue what you're looking at, unlike me) see?

Thanks for the help.

I worked on a '75 Carrera motor a few years ago and I don't remember it looking much different than other CIS car's. According to the Porsche PET it's a '75 California Carrera motor producing 118Kw vs 121Kw for the rest of the US Carrera's.

Get the engine number....it will be near the oil sender, bottom right of engine. There will be a serial number and engine number starting with 911/XX....the XX will give you the pertinenet information to look up and se what the engine block started out life as....assumimg it was not rebuilt...

My source also says 75 911s California, type 911/44. In the earlier cars, the "S" shroud was red, but on the mid years (i think it started in 74?) they are green.

What source is that, cuz that would be consistent with this being the original engine. Does it correlate VIN #s to engine #s?

Chris - Thanks for the info. Where is that screenshot from?

Can anybody tell me the differences between a '75 911S 2.7 (Cal), and the '75 Carrera 2.7 (Cal)?

It's from the PET (Electronics Parts Catalog for Porsche). This is what the dealer has on his computer at the parts counter.

Yeah, I think he meant mine. But that's what you get when its been sitting in a barn for ten years.

Anyway, haven't found the 911/xx engine number, but the plaque on the fan says 911 CID 163,9 Engine Family II - is there any significant information there? (If you can't tell, I'm Porsche stupid, as I've just bought this sucker in the past couple weeks - thanks to you guys, though, I'm learning)

Scuba, how rusty is the car? This doesn't relate to your question but I would appreciate it if you could provide some feedback.

Thanks!

Pedal Cluster was also frozen solid. Got a replacement that is gonna require a rebuild off Ebay for 15 bucks. The rest of the usual spots have some surface rust, but I haven't had a chance yet to delve to deep into it to investigate. I'm in this one for the long haul, but it's torture waiting until the day when I'll finally be able to drive it.

Why do you ask?
